This past sunday I had a bit of free time and built the rack for my 90 gallon. I also decided to spend some time on the 55 and give it a bit of a cleaning, the overflow was overgrown with what looked like hair algea, it was a deep green, and only grew in the over flow, I removed it thinking it was limiting flow (which it was). Well it was a bit of a mistake in my part, after removing it I did not realize how much nutrients they were exporting and the next day I had a cyano explosion, Im mainly getting it on my sand, and Ive been aiming my power heads near the bottom, my plan of action is to upgrade my pump on the tank and install a manifold. I'll try to have pics up soon, but just a heads up for some people.

PS: I have a fuge with cheato, but I guess it is not absorbing the nutrients fast enough, maybe people would like to consider growing some hair algea in their fuge as well, considering how thick it is, I think it would be a great nutrient exporter.

PSS: Should I start up the skimmer again to try to solve my cyano problem, I usually run it only a few times a month.

Great observation! I would definately fire that skimmer up as it will help remove the food source for the cyano. I would also suggest you up your water change schedule to help untill you get it under control.

Yea Im going to set up a water change, fire up the skimmer, and next time leave a bit of the algea behind to grow slowly. Im leaving the lights on a bit longer in the fuge too.

I, too, would love an update... I've been batting that same algae (or at least it sounds the same from your description), but mine grows on the return portion of my powerheads. I really try to keep my hands out of the tank as much as possible, so I've never removed it until it was a real eyesore. I'm wondering if maybe I shouldn't let it get that far?

I have not done much, I dosed Kalf in my top off to raise my ph and started up the skimmer. What seems to be helping is keeping the lights on a bit longer in the fuge and aiming the power heads at it.

More bad news, the 90gallon just started showing signs of cyano Q_Q
and I never mix their water no idea why.
