seahorses

ok not sure but hear it goes the angel my wife and i bought the otherday we were wondering how would it get along with seahorses?

i ask only because my wifes intrest has peaked when she started looking at them (seahorses) we were theinking maybe a 20 gal tank and maybe 4 seahorses and this angel a few crabs maybe a shrimp .............i mean i really hate to get rid of this angel and any ideas would be great............then again i'm also kicking around the idea of tearing down my 55g ciclid tank too

ok question do i need the fancy lighting for the seahorses? or will the reg lighting work? i mean i can always upgrade the bulbs on the hoods thats a easy way to do italso i understand that they need a low flow tank
was also wondering if i did maybe a over the back filter which dose 500 g a hour in a 55 tank would that be anuff? or do i need more? i also have 2 powerheads in it they could stay and also push the water about.??

then what else would i need to do for them i know a sand bed and live plants if i can find them............but would plastic also work and i also know i need lr too


any help / advice anyone can give me plz hollar at me

Jim, everything that i've heard/read about SH's is to READ 100x more on them than you would on everything else that is SW related. I unfortunatly don't have much info to give ya.

seahorses are best kept with only seahorses since they are a slower animal they can not compete for food it is best if you want...then seahorses are best by themselves..other than a clean up crew that is...

I can pretty much confirm what others have said, seahorses should be housed in a species specific environment only. For the most part anyhows, Their are some minor exceptions we've have tremendous success with as other fish with (small gobies, like a clown goby's, a mild tempered watchman). You do not want anything at all to compete for food with them, nor anything that would harrass or have the ability to become agressive. I would put to you that your Angel would not be a good combination with seahorses in any reguards,

They have very minimal lighting needs, just enough to see thier food is sufficient and suport any plant life. As I've heard from DavidP a hundred times the environment for seahorses is very low flow, high nutrient system. If you introduce higher sources of light it will 99% of the time become an algae heaven. Not to mention possible harm to the ponies as the UV will litterally sunburn them.

hmm well i thank you all for the input and i'll pass it off to my wife so she can start reading up on her project...................as far as the angel we will keep the cute lil bugger awhile longer maybe i can talk her into another tank lol for fish like him
