Overflow restrictions...help please

I have a few questions that I don't know where to look for the answers. Lets see if I have this right. (or not)

A standard all glass overflow is rated at 600 gph. On both my 65g and my 75g, I only have one overflow in each tank. No matter how many gph the pump can push out, I will only get 600 gph is that correct? Is there any way to increase the flow thru the overflow? Even if I increase the size of the PVC, it still will get decreased thru the bulkhead. Thus remains the fact that only so much water can exit thru a 3/4 inch hole at any given time. 600gph is only 6x the tank volume turn over. I would like more then that on the 75g. I do have seio pumps I can use for flow in the tank, but that doesn't help the flow thru the sump. I'd love to have a mag 12 or 18 on the 75g, but if the overflow can't handle it, it doesn't make any sense to buy one.


Can anyone chime in here with some help / answers?

Before I decided to do my 20 ga, I was going to go with the 75AGA "Megaflow" setup... So, I did some research about it, and came up with just about the same answers as you described above. Your only option would be to have the drain hole in the overflow drilled out to be larger, but its tempered glass on the bottom.

However, keep this in mind... As I'm sure you know, you only really want 4-6x turnover in your sump to increase contact time with the fuge/skimmer.

Is there a reason why you're wanting more turnover in the sump? Maybe (and probably) you know something I don't.

in the fosters book there is a over the back over flow that dose 1600 gal an hr the one i got a pic of in my thead in the diy.. 55 from the start is a 1500 gal an hr my return pump is a mag 18 hope this helps

the water going to my refuge will be quite slow. most returning to tank and some being deverted back in to the return area if its too much

It seems like the flow thru my sump is too slow for me to add a frag grow out area. I could always add a small powerhead to that area. I do have an overflow box from my non reef ready 75. That does 1200gph. I just HATE hang on overflows. That's why I prefer drilled tanks.

the answer i would give is more holes the more ways out the more coming out I have 2 that i am not happy with i am in the deliberation phase for some new fishy things....new computer or fish stuff pretty hard of a desition for me..

That does not make sense because a 1inch bulkhead with 0psi and a 1inch bulkhead with 10psi will not put out the same GPH. You have to remember as you incase flow and if the water starts to "stack" in the overflow it starts adding pressure which in theory should put you over 600GPH. btw unless the gurgling sound bothers you I removed all the stuff in the way and its a str8 hole down to the sump.

I did solve the flow problem in the tank, lol. I'm laughing hysterically as I type. I added 2 seio 2600's to the 75g tank. LOL.. It's only 4ft long. Every time I look at my 3 inch peppermint shrimp I have to laugh. So far he's hangin on, lol. He's holding onto a piece of LR for dear life. Dummy...let go and crawl under a rock or something.

6150 gph in the tank, lol. That's an impressive 82X the tank volume. He he he no more slime algae. It couldn't settle on anything if it wanted to. I'm doubting if HA could hold on at this point. Just for kicks I was going to add a 3rd seio 2600 but I prefer the water stays IN the tank. I better add the auto top (dosing pump) to the tank. I see lots of evaporation out of this tank in the future.

Now just a minute here.... it seems not too long ago you stood in our living room havig a good laugh at the 1800+gph turnover rate in my 25g nano tank!

That's it! For my 10g project I'll need to order a Mag36 for a closed loop! LOL

Why oh why do I see Tim the Tool Man Taylor in all of this. Need more Power, lol. A little more flow and a few airstones and I could have a 75g skimmer, woo hoo. Did that curing LR once.....what a mess. Funny, but messy.

Didn't you have sps in that tank? I don't have sps, lol. Well right now I don't have much of anything in this tank, but it will hold softies and LPS. So far I haven't been bitten by the "colorful stick" bug yet. I like the movement of the LPS and softies. I already know the main fish will be an Achilles Tang.
Don't care what else goes in as long as the Achilles is the # 1 fish of the tank.

That's ok...I KNOW I'm nuts. Look where we live. 1 million + people visit the dells every summer, that's a lot people peeing in our water, lol. We're bound to be contaminated and suffer brain damage in one way or another.
