ok here it is my fish tank .i thought i would start a new thread thanks for following the build thread
there is 110 lbs of live sand .. 90lbs in the tank and 20lbs in the sump which i built :) there is 1500gal otb over flow with2 1" hoses feeding a 41gal sump the skimmeris a berlin clasic that treats 500 gal an hr ,the return is a mag 18 rated for 1800 gal an hr the flow throu the tankis about 1500 an hr once the live rocks in so the flow rate to gal in tank will be x 33 the tank
the flow is perfect.. all valves wide open except for the refugium but not sure how much flow is going too it though
i may need a couple of power heads still .. but will see.. hopefull not
but i dont think it i will need them :(
well here thay are the the pics
the first few are the tank just before the pump was turned on the rest well you all will know....
the very last pic .. in the first stage of the sump has so much water going to it it was spashing out it needed a cover so. i had to make some thing so i used a rubber mat that was made the same stuff thats under the sump. it also reduced the noise some thats was cool...no snags so far thank god

Hummer
I have been reading along from the beginning. You have taken great care in building your tank slow to make sure everything was done right. Keep that pace and you will have a beautiful tank. Just some advice, you might want to get a controller for your tank, like the Reefkeeper II you will not be sorry, also look into getting an auto top off I know califronareefs has a good one that is inexpensive.
Cant wait to see the rock work.

Hummer question, is all that splashing and bubbles slowing down or minimal cause you'll have salt deposits everywhere at that rate =P

02-09-2007, 02:03 AM
your problem with all the splashing going on in your 1st chamber, I had the exact same problem when I built my first sump.
What i noticed you did was the same thing I did .... the pvc pipe for in water goes all the way to the bottom of the sump. I pulled mine out, cut off like 2 inches, and no more splashing.
If you dont want to keep the rubber mat on there and if its at all possible to pull that pipe out, trim an inch or so off, will make a huge difference.
~~I drilled holes in my pipe as well, but it just wasnt enough flow

Careful , sponges = nitrates. Looks great btw!!
hummer
02-09-2007, 08:47 AM
fatman.. ya sponges aret good but flow though sump was soo great i will have to maintan them i well probable clean them once a week
pass1over....there are big notch in the down pipes at the bottem..i thought when i added the rock i would have too take out some water but i was wrong the over box just suck it right up and put it in the sump sump is holding more water .
i think that one of the reasones the bubbles started to go a way faster but not sure

Hummer great looking tank!!! Will motivate me to work on my 55 and get her running a little better. I have a question about flow in your sump you run a mag 18 ? How wide is your sump and how deep is the water? three questions anyway. The reason I ask is that on my 100g I am setting up i will need more flow in it and am trying to figure how much flow i cam manage in sump.
hummer
02-18-2007, 12:56 AM
well my sump is 36"long 18" at it two widest parts except for 6 inches worth its10" because of the rear bracing in the center for the most part of the sump the water is 10"deep
im totaly new too salt but i wish thay would a made a mag 20 pump imo.. i thing that would of work better. i think i could of used a little more flow..for me im using my sump more like a closed loop system with a built in refuge that has very slow flow going too it
hope this makes sence to you
stevebla
02-18-2007, 12:57 PM
Hummer it is helpful information thank you. I made a sump for the LFS guy in town and he going to do other things with his filtration and is going to sell it to me today. It is 4' long 12" wide and something like 16 high with 6 baffles. I will get to experiment during fresh water test I will post photos it will be funny seeing how many pumps i can fit in return chamber. can't test micro bubbles in fresh :( .

Hmm, not to hijack your thread bob, but I'd like to address a part of Steve's question... Flow through the sump....
You really don't want more than 10-12x through a sump, and you want about 5x through your fuge. You want your water to have as much contact time in the sump (with the skimmer) as possible. So, slower is better. So, for instance, in you 100g tank, I'd go with about a 1000 - 1200gph return pump. Then, for the rest of your flow, I'd go with a closed loop manifold (CLM) or powerheads (PH's) whichever you prefer. CLM is more work, but usually looks alot better and you have more options with flow direction. Also, don't get a CLM and a RM (Return manifold) confused, alot of people do. I would sugguest something like a mag 12 or 18 for your return. And probably something from the Sequence line for a CLM (like a dart or a barracuda). But, that's just me.

so far things are good no deaths and thay all still have good appitights(sp) ac window is out of the Ques..... i do have a ac in the house but too early in the season to turn it on yet and some times she shuts it off any way
fans yes would help and it did ...but i think a chiller would be a wize and save hasal free way to go . that way it in line with my way of thinking ..
whitch is if you going too do some thing do it right the first time!!! it will save you time and money in the long run poeple run back up heater. why not have a chiller for the same reason and it will be one more thing i dont have too worry about.see im trying too set up the tank as a hands off set up . lol lol just my take a while too get there ... hehehe
all donations wellcome ... ;) all in fun:)

IMO the clown/nem relationship is one of the coolest things in this hobby.
I see your point on getting a chiller, are they going to be cheaper to run than a small a/c. On the other hand, if you have an a/c you also get a cooler less humid room. Just a thought.

is it just me or does it look like that rose is about to split? u should be having 2 here pretty soon. A way that I've found to get them to split is do a watter change when you see them starting and they will split faster. Sometimes it will encourage them to split even when they haven't already started. Looking good though!

i thought he might be ..i hope he dont i like the size of him but the rock he it is in is very deep 4 to 5 inch if he dose split he will have too come out of the rock. befor he found this house he was on top of the rock and at night he would get real long about the size of a 20 oz bottle and the clowns would be is side him it did look cool ...
i should of took a pic but i didnt :( sorry all :(

make sure you feed them! they are not so hardy if you just ignore them. they are a filter feeder but you may want to offer it small foods near it to make sure it gets its fill... good luck!

hey bud, be careful with the wrasse and mandarin as they both eat pods but the mandarin exclusively eats them and so these two fish will be competing for food. you may need to buy a stock of pods now and then unless you can get the mandarin weined onto sinking pellets or frozen brine.

awww man, those danged wrasses are notorious for that. window screening works great for that or any kind of netting that they can't fit through.

Lady Speed Stick, huh? Does it work well for you?

Only kidding! (I'm sorry, but I just couldn't let that one get by...)

The pics are great, and your tank is really coming along nicely! Kudos to your family for helping you keep the temps down! :)

I've been seeing temps between 85-86 every day lately. I'm trying to convince someone to let me get a chiller. Sure, they're costly up front, but it's better than losing all the $ you put into livestock...

BTW -

I bought an oscillating fan (I think 16") and a 7" Honeywell "Turbo" fan Monday night. The small fan sits inside the tank cabinet (blowing over the sump), and the big one blows over the water surface of the display tank. In only 2 days, I have seen a temp drop from 86 to 79 degrees.

Looks good Hummer. I recent read the thread the followed your build of this tank. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing. It certainly got the wheels of this newbie spinning. I am in the process of building a 55 myself and was wondering if there is anything you would have done differently? Are you happy with the CLM?

About that macro algae... some of my tanks have it & some don't. If you don't like certain ones, I'd do my best to remove them by hand. I would not recommend buying a fish and hoping it will eat the algae you don't want.

Call me crazy, but I have some macro algae that I actually like, but I do have to keep it trimmed back. It doesn't take long to go crazy!

Yeah, I have a 55 Gal display and am ready for more room. In Time. In need to get the floors in the Main living area done before I go that route. I have been eye balling a 120 tall w/ starfire glass. It is super sweet. Oh well. One project at a time.
