I reciently bought a toadstool leather at the LFS. While it was there it was a beautiful green and had it's feeders extended and really looked nice. it has been in my tank for a few days now and has yet to open. It is in my nano, about 2/3 of the way up in modeerate flow. What should I do to try to get this guy open. I feed the tank cyclopeeze and DT's premium reef blend. all params look good so all I can think is wrong spot or wrong food. My bulb in the tank is about a year old but I have a MH 70W pendant that DHL said is going to show up today.

Any ides,

Joe

My toadstool is generally open when I come into work in the morning, then the lights click on and it closes for most of the day only to reopen later on. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it doesn't shrink or look like it's dying. Then again, I might be a moron. :)

I have watched it at night and have yet to see it open. I am hopeing that when the halide shows up it will open and that my old bulb is to blame.

I think they can just get testy at times. My leather sometimes stays closed for a couple of days for no apparent reason. As Eric said, keep an eye on it; as long as it isn't obviously in trouble I wouldn't worry too much. :)

Give it more time. Leathers can shut down for 3 or more days before reopening.

probablt still acclimating to your tank. it can take a couple of weeks to fully acclimate to a new tank.

You have it under MH? Thats WAY too much light for a leather unless its deep or not directly under the MH! They don't need tons of light. Leathers do have a habit of closing up for a while then suddenly opening. They also shed sometimes.. looks like crap when they do ! We have 2 175w MH but none of the leathers are directly under them (Big Devil's hand and Green Tree) .. Give him a few he should be fine...

He is off to the side but it is a 70W MH over a 10 gal so there is not much room to hide. He started to shed a slime lastnight then today I saw a polyp or two come out of him and I just checked and there are about 10 trying to come out now????

I have a big toadstool in my tank and when I first got it, it did the same thing.
I asked one of the Marine bioligists at my LFS and he told me that they will close up like that to shed a top layer of skin(Clean themselves). This could take anywhere form a week to three weeks.
Mine stayed closed for about 2 WEEKS then opened bigger and better than when I got it.
It will look like a waxy film peeling off of it, and when that's done it should open in a day or so.
Mine is in the process of doing it again (4 months later) and it's been closed for about a week now.
Nothing to worry about.
PS
Mine is directly under a 250w MH with a MaxiJet 1200 blowing almost directly on it and it LOVES it.
