Sunday night we let the dogs out of the house. They started barking so we hurried up and let them in. Once they were in the house we found out they had gotton skunked.

So we all ran around the house trying to get the dogs unstinky, and then trying to get the house unstinky. If you ever had this happen you know how hard this is.

No one thought anything of my 75 gal tank, we turned the lights off and went to bed. I woke up the next morning and the tank was cloudy and everything was dead. All I can think of was the aresol must have been sprayed over it and gotten into the water.

So I just wanted to let you all know and warn you of something you may have never even thought of.

RIP Fishes

I guess, i don't know what else would have killed everything over night, i mean less then 12 hrs everything was dead. I tested my water a week or so before and everything was a little high (ammo around .5) where it normally is before I did a water change, so there is no way just over night everything would be dead. at least that is all i can figure out.

They are known to melt down. Mine did exactly that, but also poisoned my water when the epoxy stuff they put on the pump where it joins the power cord burnt and released toxic chemicals :(

Lost 5 of 7 chromis

That sucks, I never heard of a pump doing that.

Yup "Be careful", it happens very commonly w/Rio's  since they are not UL listed

BTW, Im guessing it was the Lysol that killed your fish :(

Rio's also release an oil that is used to help cool the motor. That has crashed entire tanks.

There is no oil in Rio pumps! They may melt but no oil. SEIO's are Rio pumps also! Do Seios "kill" tanks???

it was more than lubricant, lubricant will float and form layer on the surface, this stuff was just suffocating my fish  an it smelt like a burnt tennis shoe!

I'm sure there are other things in the pump but they are known to leak lubricant. I'm sure that there are resins in there like you said to seal the pump.

There are no lubricants the only moving part is the impeller.

Rio pumps are UL listed. I am a happy user of Rio pumps if I get burned by them i'll let you know. I think that a ground fault would be required to melt anything and a blown GFCI is my worst risk.

Amanda, I am SO sorry to hear about your loss!

I've never had to deal with a "skunking" problem, but my aunt used to have two pet skunks. They had been "de-skunked", but they still had a residual odor about them. I also had a skunk amble in front of me while I was sitting outside once. Truth be told, I smelled him before I saw him - I don't think I have ever been that perfectly still in my entire life, lol! I didn't want to startle the poor little guy, or it would've been poor little Tracy!

tomato juice or paste or something gets the smell off

Thanks everyone. The dogs still smell faintly of it, but the house finally smells good. The worse part of the smell if you are really close to it is that it burns into your nose and when you leave you still smell it.

When I was cleaning out the tank the sand smelled like skunk so it was kind of strange.

What do you think I should do with the tank? This is the thrid time it has crashed. I have never had another tank crash so I don't think it is something I'm doing. I got it used. Toward the bottom it looks like it has been resealed. I was going to try and sell it before I saw thte bottom, but now I think the tank would have to be resealed. What do you all think, should I sell it as is and warn the person who buys it, should I take it apart and reseal it, or should I just use put it up in the garage.

I would warn any potential buyers and get rid of that headache. You have shown that you are a good "mommy", and it sounds like it's time to start completely fresh.

Again, my condolences on your loss...
