View Full Version : Flow & Plumbing Want to Increase Flow ... Suggestions?

I want to increase the flow in my 90g tank (48" long). Right now, all I have are the 2 - 1" returns from the sump. My return pump is a Turbo Sea 1100.

I am almost decided on modded MaxiJets (I'm open to suggestions), but I am not certain how many I should get. I know I want at least two (near the top at opposite ends of the tank). I'd also like to have some flow across the back/bottom of the tank. I have a center overflow, and I'm wondering how much good PHs down there are going be when the overflow obstructs full flow. Any thoughts?

I'd do the korola's (sp)

Tracy, I'm still rather partial to the Seio PH's... a pair of them on opposite sides of the tank really moves some water... and letting their *streams* collide makes for some great turbulence to increase gas exchange. Putting them in back corners generally improves the flow behind your aquascaping as well (all that water being moved has to be replaced from somewhere right? Even if it doesn't leave the glass cage)

Do you suggest putting the PH's near the top of the tank, middle, or bottom behind the LR? Anyone have any info on prefered placement?

I had a Koralia 1 here (bought it for one of my nanos but never got around to taking it out of the box), and I put it in the 90g around 11am. My pavona, pocillipora and millepora retracted immediately. I adjusted the flow so it went more over than at the corals, and it made no difference. I unplugged it after a couple of hours, and even four hours later they had not relaxed enough to open up.
<sigh> I know I need more flow because I have to regularly blow detritus off my plating monti (top/center of the tank). I simply(?) need to determine what is best for my corals and the limited space that they live in.

Dang - I'm so distracted I didn't even finish my post above...

I'm concerned b/c the Koralia 1 is only 400gph! Would putting the PHs on a wavemaker make a difference?

I really appreciate the help! :)

I use Pacific Coast Flow Accelerators (their fancy name for Eductors), your pump should do wonders with them and the best part is all you have to do is put them on your return outlets and BAM! 4x the circulation you had before.

I made a DIY version if you are the DIY type ;)

BTW, I use 2 in my 90g w/a comparable pump and it is my only source of flow.
These are my DIY eductors, work the same as the PC Flow Accelerators but way cheaper ($5-$6).

You do have to give your corals some time to adjust to the new flow.

Thanks a lot everyone! I'm still making my final decision, and it may contain PHs on a wave-maker timer AND flow accelerators :)

Marc, I appreciate your comment... yes, I had neglected to allow time for the corals to adjust to the new flow. :o

I have a 20g tall and a 60g. The 20g has approx. 1000 gph running through it.
The 60g has over 3000 gph and I still need more.
Your corals will be mad at you for a few days...then they will love you for it...
My suggestion would be 4 Koralia 4's. 2 at each end.
Just a thought.

Geez only $425 before shipping... what a bargain those VorTech's are..
Tracey I have a pair of Seio 1500's that will create some great flow for ya, if you point them straight up they could even help empty the tank for you too! :)

give the eductors a try before you buy anything more expensive, you might be in for a surprise :)

hee hee I never commented on their ability or not, just the fact they aren't giving them away (especially to me) is disappointing :) Yours is the first non-solicited response I've read of them. Always plenty of 'sponsored' opinions to go around, taken with a bucket of salt mix there may be some truth in them (about this product and others).

I put a moded maxi-jet1200 in my 75 gal. That thing putsout 2000gph!! It cam with to props. One does 1600 and the other does 2000. I got the pump and the stuff for the mod for $33 from marinedepot. A couple of those on your 90 would be perfect!

I have a 90 gallon tank and I was curious how many GPH I should have flowing through my tank. I know that I do not have enough. I've looked at the Seio's and they range from 600 to 2600 GPH. I'm thinking of 1 at each end. What is too much flow????

at least 30x waterflow. so at least 2700gph. Some do as much as 50x!

that helps. I'm not even close! Anyone have any experience with wave makers?
