My brain coral has completely detached from it's base. I'm attaching a picture from a few days ago and you can see that it had started to detach in the pix. I just got home and it is now completely seperated from it's base. Is this normal? Is it going to die? should I do something? It still looks completely healthy.

yes it is just floating around the tank. In the above pic., where you can see the underside of the coral, you can see the circular cone base that is down in the sand. Now that circular hard piece is still there and the fleshy top part has floated over to the LR. Problem is that I won't be able to check on it today until about 10:00 tonight. Yikes! I'm not home so I can't get a pic. This can't be good!

have read on some sites that when a brain gets to big it will detach itself from its base to become free floating and land on life rock to live the rest of its life.

I wish. It floated over and got sucked into the tiny holes in my Millinium filter. I ended up losing him. :(

It happens in this hobby. I hope I don't get used to it however.

I didn't know that about a brain coral. I have one too but it's in the nano tank and probably couldn't fit behind the LR to get caught in the pump. WOW get's too big for it's britches, huh? Interesting!

I didn't think mine was too big. I only had the thing about 3 months. You can see the thing detatching in the above pic though.
