I want to be able to mark/number a reef plug or at least in some way be able to identify corals that are from other reefers & lineages, or some that have come straight from the ocean.
Is there a product that is safe to use for marking such as a Sharpie? Obviously, needs to be permanent and waterproof, but more importantly, needs to not have ill effects on my reef tank. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I take a picture of the coral to track growth and then you can label it as you want to remember info. I also have every coral in an excel program with who I got it from.

Yeah... pictures. LOL I have multiples of many things and some of those are from different sources. That's why I was wondering how to go about marking items. I think I've seen that done on maybe some wholesaler pages or something. I'll have to see if I can find some sample pictures of marked items.

I have started to wright on my frag plugs with a dremel using a high speed cutter bit like this.

(I just put first letters of the name or first letter of ever word, It makes them easier for me to id the stuff I have. As far as who I bought the coral from. I save all of that in my note pad on my pc, I dont by to many wild corals, most of my stuff is from other reefers.)
Hear is a vary small example from my note pad (If I posted them all I would not be able to post it would be to long i think. LOL
Desert Sunset - rmw = rose marine world
Blue sherbert - Trop
Bryan's baby aka Hybrid Watermelon - Trop

Beat me to the dremel comment, a diamond bit and a little water, you can write anything you want on the plug.

I have not used water yet when I do it. I do it before I even mount the frag so there is no added stress to the frag. I put letters on the bottom of the frag plugs that I make.

Water in not a must have, but if using diamond bits it will extend their life.
