Yahooeeeee I found a baby brittle star in my tank-thanks Tom!!
Cool. I'm glad they survived the trip. I saw at least two that hitched a ride on the frags, along with some pods (amphipods and isopods). Together they make a pretty good CUC in my tank. Plus there a lot of fun to watch.
Enjoy!

I'm knocking on wood-everything is flourishing! Tested water today-unless I make some major changes I test once a month-I do test make-up water for consistency.
Today's readings are: ph=8.2 kh=9 cal=420 nitrates=.0
Same readings as last month. Pretty cool right!

Thanks guys! I do need to set some traps for my bristle worm issues. They're breeding like crazy. Excavating the LR, some making holes as big as a pencil. I can't keep any other type of CUC, they wind up starving! Thing is the traps here run 21$
I know bristles are great scavengers but I have at the least, 20+ in my tank.

let me save you some time:yawnstretch: MizTanks. Bristle worm traps will never work, mainly because they never have. bristle worms(polychaeta) are apart of a working reef, and are a part of your clean-up crew. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/annelida/polyintro.html "Of the approximately 9000 species of annelids, more than 8000 are polychaetes. These segmented worms are among the most common marine organisms, and can be found living in the depths of the ocean, floating free near the surface, or burrowing in the mud and sand of the beach. "
basicly you need to beef up other parts of you cleanup crew if the population get out of control.

LOL, I like the maroon better myself. Mine usually ends up getting covered with the pink stuff after awhile. Or you can scrape it if it isnt your color. I found some plastic razor blades at my ACE hardware for really cheap in the paint section. My old scraper had metal so would rust.

My tank is living beyond her means. She keeps bring home these beautiful corals who only to soon out grow her. I tell her to get a bigger place. She says she has one already available but that it has no electricity therefor no lights. I feel bad for her :(
I try to reassure her that it won't be long, and promise that I'll help her move when the time comes. Until then just keep your tank clean, buy no more corals and keep the ones you do have healthy. She hugs me, and with a big thank you promises to do the best she can. See mom!

Couple weeks ago I brought home 2 teeny weeny blue leg hermits-today I brought home about 10 new shells of various shapes and sizes. They weren't in there 5min and both little buggers came out and started a tug-o-war.
One left a winner the other kept looking.
I also picked up an mj404 for added flow.
Ever have one of those days while looking at your tank you say to yourself, man my tank looks awesome and perfect, and you wouldn't change a thing?
Well today I did and I'm going to bed totally content with the way it looks. :)

I only have a few pieces too but the collection is starting to grow. I lost some to begin with. I think I started too soon after switching tanks. I even eventually lost my very hardy poccilopora to algae, they for sure dont like it. It smothers them to easily the pocci just disolved where some long algae was flowing into it. I have a handle on that now though.
Some think the hydnophora is a sps but it really isnt. It is very nasty though if it comes in contact with another coral. Very shocking bright green so it is a nice piece. I am not really into accros yet, lost 2 frags and have 1 nice red planet going well.
The orange digi is alive on the side that didnt touch the hydno, and a few straggling polyps are showing up on the melted side. Looks like it should recover, I will show comparitive pics when I can.

Word of advise here from the newly experienced. NEVER put a pistol shrimp and a tail spot blenny into an 8g tank.

looks fine to me, nothing to worry about really IMO, they tend to do that from time to time, nothing will ever stay perfectly open 100% of the time. they could have a pod in there running all over them or a hermit or snail could of gone across them and caused them to close and within a few days should be back to normal. where i would start to worry is if they completely close up for a 7 days or so and have no opened at all in that time, then you should worry but other than that i think everything looks ok. it could also be the top off water you use, if you pour it directly in the tank in large amounts they could of got a shock of fresh water hit them and caused them to do that, if this is the case top off the tank more frequently.

Still working on that, (shhhhhh it's a not talked about topic, haha) Seems when I 'talk' about it, I lose them, (go figure) but if I don't then I seem to do well ? Stupid I know.
Anyway- the pulling the eggs out the night of hatch does not work for me, I am not sure if I am letting air get to them, or the change in temp, or not enough circulation on the eggs to keep them moving, or what...they don't have a good hatch rate if I take them out...so I am going back to what I did in the beginning and manually remove the larvae after they've hatched.
I have a very large cluster of eggs right now (clutch?) and am hopeful :)
Things with the clowns have been halted.... as we have been focusing on our rottweiler (Ceasar) within a month we found he had cancer, very large tumor, very progressive- spread too quickly. We had to make the decision of putting him down the morning before Christmas Eve... we are heartbroken :( He was such a good, loving, loyal - protective member of our family. He will be missed greatly.:(
So needless to say - I have been m.i.a. as far as the forums go.. but I have been popping on and reading the posts on the MBI site - and reading both Joyce Wilkerson's and Martin Moe's books- (facebook pal pointed out Martin Moe....and come to know one of our newest members of our local club actually knows Mr. Moe, visits him often!) So I feel a planned group outing to the Moe residence coming up in the warmer weather, lol
Hope all have a Very Happy Holiday if You Celebrate :)

Thanks Chris- yeah- apparently it is something they have in the breed, seems to be a common thing (ours was 5 1/2 yrs old) (we will be looking for another pup - need to check with the breeders here in Florida for a full blooded german.... hard to find a male. :( Seems to be alot of females out there... lol... but not a male to be found!
Jamie- how do you get them to multiply into a cluster? Mine just stay where they are.. not spreading like weeds the way others mention. What exactly are you feeding? Did you buy a cluster, or a few polyps when starting?
MizTanks
01-02-2011, 05:20 PM
The Radios I got from the LFS had 5 polyps~so small they just gave em to me. Don't feed nothing just 1+g's WC weekly. It's a small tank don't ya know and it's so easy to change. Seems there are only a few types of zoa's I have luck with. These are one.
On another note I'm bringing a Favia (not the x-mas one) into the LFS. Got up this morning and found it stinging :smash: my one and only teeny weeny Ric.

Hi Chelle, ya know I've never known the name of them. They have a very dark purple carpet and the polyps are more pink then anything. Very hardy. It was given to me (rock and all) about a year ago. I keep it away from my zoas as it just runs em over, (experience talking here) ;)

I am just starting to add chemicals to mine. I am not crazy about it either but I have to keep cal and alk up. The pink coraline seems to be sucking it up. Not too long ago I had too much cal and swithed to the purple bag of Instant ocean. Back on the orange bag now and using 2 part till it is correct, then Kalkwasser! lol. It is a little scary, a mistake could wipe out the tanks.

I never herd of just leaving it open to raise the PH, how does it work?
Is it just the off gassing of co2 that does it?
But any way glad it worked.
MizTanks
01-07-2011, 12:32 PM
Since the biocubes have no real venting aside for 2 little fans, which are used more to remove heat. There is no way for co2 exchange, since the hood is a tight fit. Plus I get no evaporation, no top off no new water of any kind until WC. To me this is not good.
I don't know how this works exactly but we could, Ask the Experts, here.

She's just over 1" with a max size of 2 1/2" they do require (believe it or not grrr) film algae. HA or something similar. So I bought a small piece of LR (very small) covered with the stuff. Placed it in a corner up front away from everything else. She is mowing it down. Wish I'd of known this 6-8 months ago :) I also have a tuff of it growing on the intake vents, she should be good.

Film algae should be everywhere for her. Your tank is aged enough, you just cant really see it. :) Good idea on a really small tank though, trade out some rock every so often if she is looking hungry. My starfish eats that and even in an 80g if I add a new rock, it sniffs it out and is right on top of it,lol.
They just had one of those at our LFS here and I really considered grabbing it. Very pretty. I got an engineer though since I had the deep sand bed for it.

Again, sorry for the confusion and I'd like to welcome you to my own world of confusion, i.e. Lights, refugiums, wave makers and pumps. Oh my!! :) :) Just follow the yellow brick road :jester:

YUCK! My tank looks horrible~my one and only mini colony of zoa's that I've had for at least a year appear to be on the way out. No idea why.
My new Rainford goby is MIA. She was out and about for the first week and then she started hiding. Now I haven't seen her in days.
Today I finally ordered my DR and HOB fuge.
Here's a pic of my Favia, taken with my new Canon Power Shot.
And my poor dead zoa's.

The pic's look kinda yucky to me~I used the vivid setting on my camera (i think) and all the colors are like 10x what they really look like~so I guess it's kinda fake.

I'm so sick and freaked out!!! On my way to the bathroom I thought I'd take a peek in my tank with a flashlight. God I wish I hadn't done it.
To my utter horror there in the corner of the tank were a dozen or so bristle worms attaching and eating my Peppermint shrimp! I just fed her tonite before I went to bed, she would eat out of my hand.
Who said bristle worms were harmless? I bet that's where my lil Rainford goby went. Someone told me to try starving the worms out and that's what I had been doing. Wrong!! They obviously won't stand back and starve.
I've gotta get these things out of my tank!! There's just way to many of them. I'm serious. At least 25~30+, the biggest I've seen is about the size of a pencil, smallest a pencil led.
If anyone has a idea for some sort of trap, please let me know a.s.a.p.

First let me say bristle worms aren't a bad thing, but like all things in our aquariums when the balance is off they can be quite a pest. I had the same problem a couple of years ago and I bought a arrow crab and he ate almost all of the bristle worms. I bought him small and took him back to the LFS twice the size and very well fed and now I only have a few. If it ever gets out of control again I will do it again. No chemicals no gizmo with food roting in the tank all natural.

bristle worms are a good thing, are you sure that your peppermint shrimp didn't molt and they were just eating his molted skeleton? they are a great clean up crew member so unless he shrimp was already dead or it was his skeleton i don't think they would touch it.
if you do want to get rid of them a 6 line wrasse will munch them all up good but they can get sort of aggressive, my previous one was tame and very active. he cleaned up my old flatworm problem i had in a previous tank within a month too. That would be my suggestion. they do make traps for them that you can get at most stores but i value them as a clean up crew member.

I do value them also. However they have multiplied like crazy just way to many for my little tank. The shrimp was still alive and was trying to get out from underneath them but there was to many on top. I saw one actually work it's way into it's upper body cavity. I did try to get them away but I was to late.

one main factor as to why there could be so many is due to over feeding, possibly cut down on the amount you are feeding if you do feed a lot. as far as the trap i think you can get them at any pet store, i know petsmart has them, pet supplies plus, my local saltwater stores carry them. they are pretty easy to find but i am not to sure with where you live if that will be the case. if you can take the rock out and just do a freshwater dip a lot of times they will just come running out of the rock along with other pests.

Thanks jolson. We do have the traps here but geeez they're like $20 just for one. Anyways as far as feeding goes, where at one time I may have been over feeding my tank, this is no longer the case. I'm actually feeding once every other day and only then am I spot feeding fish and corals.
Aside from using a trap, I've come up with the idea of taking out the LR that I can and placing it into a bucket of makeup water. Putting food at one end, and when they storm out to feed I'll remove the rock. Sound like a good idea?

that is tough to do because they never come fully out of the rock, they usually leave 1/4 of their body in the rock so the second you go to grab the rock and remove it then boom they are back into the rock. that is why i suggested the freshwater dip, it may harm other beneficial things but if you want the worms gone it works pretty well.

Arrow crab is reef safe and will go after bristle worms. It looks like they are picking at everything but they are just reaching in the openings to get the worms.
But like I said earlier you don't want them all gone but in balance they are helpfull.

I had quite a large arrow crab but not sure where he has went to. He wasnt any trouble but a mandarin did go missing about that time. I never saw it even acting like it was interested in fish (cant say the same for my coral banded shrimp) . Better to get a small one though and not all of them will do the job you want it for. Hope for the best as in aggresiveness and also diet :)
My coral banded was doing a good job w/ bristles but also lunged at fish so he had to go back to the store. That is my pic you see at the top sometimes of the CB and the bristle worm.
There is no "easy" or "sure" choice about these things because they all have a downfall and the animals can act very differently from another.

Especially ware they are all over your polyps.

I have alot too. I am trying to think of a way to get rid of/control mine. Bums me out that my little engineer goby got spiked so much he died. The larger one is smarter and avoids them somehow though. My plan is to add jawfish later and would like them gone. My b-worms seem smart, they run when I put the forceps near the tank, lol.

I feel horrible! Been so caught up with the new tank, I haven't posted nothing about lil 8g in almost a month. However not much has changed with her. I do have a bunch of those tube snails (? name) all over the place. Even in the fuge and on the pump.
I removed a piece of LR and added it to my 26 fuge along with some really nice red macro algae that has taken to growing on the walls.
After much much thought I've decided to tear down lil 8g, adding all her contents to the 26. Biggest reasons being, more work keeping 2 running. She's so scratched up and I would really like to polish those out. I also see how so many of my corals are not what all they could be. I think if I could afford the hood upgrade I would start her over and use it as a grow out tank for the Favia's I so love :)
Anyways that's the plan for this here tank.

Some times it is best, having multiple tanks can at times get overwhelming.
I find myself wanting to cut down to just 1, that way you aren't leaving one to take care of another.
Sir Patrick
02-26-2011, 12:23 AM
^ I agree with 2pairs, but-
You could always slack on the 8g and actually grow some zoas in it?!?!?!? Just run it w/one water change a month!!!
MizTanks
02-26-2011, 12:56 AM
Sir your memory seems to be shorter then mine-I've been trying to grow zoas in this tank for over a year now-I have but 1 mini colony of no names that has with stood the test of time (had to say that) other then those, nadda.
The only corals that seem to thrive in this tank are LPS. Duncan, Favia and Candy cane.
With that said I see it more as a qt-dipping station, grow out tank. Fill it with macro-cheato an let it grow.
Heck I don't know. But I do know for sure zoas don't like this tank. But then again I might have kept it too clean. ??
Sir Patrick
02-26-2011, 01:17 AM
Yup- 2 clean.
If you slacked on the water changes, you might just grow some zoas!!!

Well I haven't posted here inna bit. Lil 8g is still running although with a lot less corals. All corals not attached to LR have be transplanted into the 26g. My Favia and Candy Cane sure are loving the new move.
I'm not quit sure what I'm going to do with her. I've learned a lot running this tank. But I'm actually feeling excited about tearing it down. I'm over the novelty, and yes all the work. There's a lot of good memories and a lot of bad ones. So I guess I'll just use it for a qt tank.
