I need a better skimmer than the one I have (red sea berlin), unfortunatly I dont have any spare cash at the moment. Right now, I am stashing all my extra for a new tank and new lights.

I ran across this-

Its a “Euro-Reef Ripoff” w/ Skimmer with Odyssea 500 needle wheel pump.

Will be a temporary skimmer till my new tank and lights get paid for. Then a real skimmer will be in order, taking the place of a red sea berlin (older model) in sump skimmer.

Would like to hear everyones thoughts.

I was told by the guy (some one I know and trust) getting rid of it that it pulled some nasty stuff out of his tank.

Let me know what you guys think.

I have seen some pvc home made skimmers like that work very well even outpreform some of the major commercial skimmers

main thing is look at the dims to make sure it will be big enough for your tank

I have not had great luck with odyssea pumps, I would change that pump out with a better quality pump.

Honestly I don't understand what makes a good skimmer and what doesn't? They are all just acrylic with a cup and a pump?
Why do some totally rock and some just flat suck?

Thx for all the replies so far.

Mike-

He wants a few pounds of live rock (which I am going to have a huge overabundance of soon) and a frag of red monti cap and a digi frag.

As for lights, I am looking at a 4 bulb t5ho w/ individual reflectors. Specifically the nova slr set up.

sp i would definately jump on that

what makes a good skimmer is shap and how well it breaks the bubbles up with the pump also bubble to water contact time is a big factor

Thx tazzy- already made the jump. Figuring out a good time to make the trade now.

I will keep everyone posted on how well it works. I cant use it on my tank right now, no sump, but will be running it on a 10 gallon tank in the basment that I fill with old waterchange water, for skimmer testing.

Well then, I guess knowing what you paid for it will give me a good idea of what to offer you when you upgrade again!!

Depending on if I can get the set up I want out of the wife or not I very well may be.

What size range of tanks does he say it works for??

Sir Patrick

Never asked a size range, but he was using it on a 75 gallon tank.

Total height is 26" w/ collection cup and diameter is 8". Pump is odysea 500 needle wheel. After tearing it apart and putting it back together, it looks just like alot of the large in sump reef octo skimmers.

I picked it up yesterday. Cant wait to see how it performs.

What do you guys think??

I would think you will be pretty good with it, there are plenty of good skimmers on basic principles out there.

Went with him to pick this up(among other things). Looks like a good skimmer and the guy seemed really cool. I'm sure he will give you an update on how it performs when it is installed.

I ran across a reefer buddy that got to see this skimmer in action a while back. Said it was an excelent skimmer, and pulled some nasty stuff. He told me there is no reason to mod it for the size tank I will be running it on, but if I wanted even better results I could mod it to run it recirculating and overflow fed.

What do you guys think of that idea??

Modding it wouldnt be hard and have what I need to do it. Should I go ahead and mod it? I am leaning towords yes, but would like to here some info around here first.

I like the idea of all the overflowed water getting run through the skimmer.
