Not sure on the algea....but I am running bio pellets these days.
The black mollies are doing great! Waiting for them to produce coral food (babies). They always stay together, and are starting to roam the tank more offten.

So....I havent updated in a while.....but my gears have been turning and the reef is steadily growing.
You have all seen the work in progress, and the downsize. What comes next you ask????
Rebuild it all together!!!! Yes! I am moving, and the move comes along with my very own fishroom/mancave. No longer constricted to any restraints, excluding the financial ones!
Hows this sound- 65 gallon breeder (original work in progress tank) with the existing 50 gallon breeder tank as a grow out/frag tank, with the original work in progress sump? I still have the original DIY protien skimmer, and it was a monster!!!
I am sure I can tie all 3 tanks together on one system easily.
Might even do a back up/frag tank on its own system too! Never know whats in store for the future!

Nice looking tank Chris....
Sir Patrick
10-10-2011, 08:24 PM
Thanks Martin!
It is currently going through a small "new tank syndrome". I moved the 50 breeder to our new home recently, and changed back over to the 65 breeder, in the pic.
I used some city tap water to make up for water I didnt have for the sump and the extra 15 gallons in the display, and topped off with it for a couple weeks till I got my RO online, so I am battling a bit of algea. Hope this phase doesnt last too much longer.
I am hoping to have the frag racks out of the tank soon also. In my opinion, they are an eyesore. Looking forward to having them out of the tank.
I think I have room for a couple more choice pieces of rock, to add to the scape I have got so far.....time will tell! With such a tall tank, I decided to go with the traditional "wall of rock" look, and make it work with the coral selection I add as I go.
larryandlaura
10-10-2011, 08:36 PM
Well "the wall of rock" is very cool. Glad its back up and running Chris. Now its time for the frag tank.
SaltyDog
10-10-2011, 08:42 PM
Yeah the tap water will do it every time.....lol.At one point in time we had to resort to that too.But I noticed if I filled up a rubbermaid tub full of the tap water and run a large HOB filter with Chemi-pure Elite in the chambers I noticed little effect of the new tank syndrome.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d87/sirpatrick1/fishtank/100_3973.jpg
I decided against conecting it to my exsisting system, and am going to let it run itself. Hooked up the bubble magus hang on back skimmer, a few lbs of cycled live rock, a modded maxi jet, and am going to let it run, watching the cycle. If there is a cycle at all, it should be pretty short, with the cycled and freshly cooked for 2 years live rock.
Still figuring out lighting and frag rack, and might add a carbon reactor- but still figuring out what direction I really want this frag tank to go.
Heres the 2 tanks together-

DT is looking very nice Chris! The extra rock will give you some room to spread out :) Lucky ducky with that frag tank right there!! You should get another little tang to tear up that HA ;) This would be an instance where the "borrow a tang" program would work great!! hehehe

Frag tank is running along, doing its thing. Working on lighting and a canopy for it pretty soon. I have 2 24" t5ho bulbs to add into the canopy, as well as 2 PC actinics to light the frag tank. Going to figure out what I plan on doing for a frag rack here pretty soon too, and move all the frags over.
Got a couple new additions for the display also-
A lawnmower blenny and a blue sided wrasse. Hope they both enjoy their new home!

hey chris, try PVC 1" or so, make a box with 4 PVC 90 degree elbows that will go around the insideof the tank and sit flat on the bottom and zip tie egg crate that you can get from home depot in the ceiling tile section to the top of it. this seems to work really well in most tanks.

Ever consider useing a clay pot to keep the rbta and clowns in place then you can have both.I have two BW and they keep that RBTA in his home where he belongs !!! Couldn't have the rbta without the the clay pot.

Even though it sounds like a cool idea, and I apreciate the info (and learned something new)-
I would really like to have it out and open, in the reef. Like it is in nature. Swaying back and forth. The top of the right rock structure, I think, would make a perfect spot for it. Its around 300-350 in par, with good random flow, in this area, and think it could really make a RBTA happy. Might just go back to Blasto Wellsi (among other nice LPS) collecting, for the lower areas of the tank.
I am just feeling the urge for a change of pace.....after all these years- I have never kept a "Nem" centered tank, and I got the clowns that would appreciate it.
But still....decisions, decisions......

I have felt my aquascape has been lacking a nice plateau......and have finally found one I truely enjoy. Not your typical Monti cap, hollywood stunner, ect.
Gotta give Corvette Reefer props for growing it out all these years, in his little 20 gallon tall. He started out with a 50 cent sized piece, from me, as a newb, with a new tank, and grew this monster!

Finally, after too long procrastinating, I upgraded my return pump. Picked up a mag 7 and replaced the quiet one 1200.
What a difference!!! The tank is really rollin now, and the crud that has accumulated in my tank is going over the overflow and down to the sump and skimmer. I should have done this sooner!
Got a nice top down of the tank too-

I have a feeling that pretty soon this build is going to go another direction pretty soon........if not just end and start over in yet another build thread. How many has it been? 5???? LOL!
I am really thinking about going back to a small display, mostly LPS and a sea anemony and a pair of clowns. I just dont care for the aquascapping on this dimension tank anymore........
I really like the system that the tank is sitting on though. It has been a proven system to grow SPS and Zoas very well, at the same time. I am thinking about putting a 33 breeder frag/growout tank in its place. Same system, same everything, just a much smaller tank and much more concentrated light, due to the height, on top of it.
I should have just done it today when I had the display empty of all its live rock. I had to take it all out, to catch my Kole Tang, who found a new home in preperations for the changes!
I just need to go to lowes and grab some plumbing.....

Everything was fine, till i grabbed the MB7 amd shot a good squirt into the tank....just to find out I grabed biofuel instead....
I only done the fuel to the sump, ever.
As soon as the squirt hit the water, the nem started pulsing strangely. Lights went out soon after. Havnt seen it since. I thought I might see it today, as I took all the rock out the tank, and still didnt see it.

Looks good but you really need to swap out that egg crate in the frag tank for a blue glow rack!
Nah....
I had a blue glow rack....sold it a while back. It looked nice and had some time put into it, but just couldnt justify the cost vs. building one myself.
I will eventually build a nice acrylic rack to take the place of the eggcrate. You just need the proper drill bit, bench press,a torch, acrylic sheets cut to size and some acrylic rods, and proper glue, for the most part.
Luckily, I have 90% of this stuff already.

Hey Chuck,
Great idea, but I'd need it up top. I like that thought, though. Just how can I cage the ph so there's not so much pull at the grill? I found my mandarin stuck to it two days ago. I had to shut it off so he could float down to the LR. I thought he was dying, but he's fine. Just a lousy swimmer.

My nem was hanging around, and even touching the vents on the head for days.
Mine wasnt pulled in, it wanted in......and managed to get in al the way, surely getting clobberd by the prop the entire way.
I found it, prop stopped, just a chunk of foot, inside the powerhead enclosure. After it entered itself completely, its stem caught the prop and stopped its momentum and siezed it.
Its either suicidal, or likes the reverse flow more than its life.....

My concern is not with warping but with access and ease of use. It looks like you won't have access to the sump and DT at the same time. I store all of my tools, food and dosing stuff in the stand so I usually need access to both. I don't know if that will be possible with this style of door.
Just ran across this old thread Tom@HaslettMI, believe it or not, there was some warping, but minimal- still using it easily today- both stand and canopy
