I have to say, the bigger the better. Go with the biggest tank you can place beside the tank that you are comfortable using.
I say big because the bigger the sump, the more water volume you will have on your system, which is always a good thing. If you are trying to stay small as possible, make sure you have room for everything in the sump you want, and a bit of extra room for upgrades.
Other than unsightly equipment and plumbing, I have never had a problem with a sump along side of my tank instead of under it. You might want to elevate it off the floor though. It will help when its time to syphon it out for cleaning.

The bigger the better. A rough estimate is at minimum you want a third of the actual tanks water volume...so in your case about 30 gallons...personally I would go bigger. it also depends what your doing with your sump, refugium, big skimmer...ets

What size are you thinking? What are you planning on running in your sump as far as equipment? You gonna run a refugium or frag area in there? Whats your thoughts and plans so far?

So far the only thing I have planned is the size of my tank and were it will go,I went with the biggest tank for the space I have.
My first idea was not to have a sump, but has i read I realise I will need one.But the wayI intend to install my tank my sump will have to be beside my tank,on the same level. For size I think I could go with about 30-35 g.If my sump is beside my tank is that a probleme? Is it best to have it perced or can I do with out the percing?
