Durso Stand Pipe Is Getting Louder

Okay, so most of you know I did a major o'haul on my sump a few weeks back. I ended up changing the drain line beginning at the bulk head on the bottom of the tank. It simply comes down 90 degree 6 or so inches then a 45 and a 90 into a filter sock.

My two issues that I need help with are, 1) how to quiet the Durso that has now started gurgling like a toilet. 2) how to quiet the water draining into the sock.

1) I was thinking of trimming a 1/4 inch or less off the top to shorten it a little? Would that work, I know it would help the lack luster surface skimming right now.
Or is it because there isn't any back pressure from the drain line that typically stops in the water?

2) The problem is the sock has to rest ever so slightly on the inner black trim piece that come with Great Lakes sumps. Wish I could remove it. It causes the water to drip out off the sock and to trail along the black strip then into the sump. Its pretty loud. I think the way to fix this problem is pretty obvious, stop the water running on the black thing. Done, I will just modify my current DIY holder to include an extension that enters the sump water. The water will just drip down the inside of the PVC pipe.......sorry just thought of all this while I was typing!!

So I guess I just have one problem then, will cutting the durso shorter help at all?

Is the air line or air hole clean in the durso? Or perhaps it needs to be larger, if the flow increased?

Have you changed anything with you overflow? when I changed out from a single outlet to a dual plumbed outlet I had a small half round knockout missing where the original outlet came out of the overflow. It was causing the water to flow to fast into the overflow and my downpipe was gurgling. I added a small sponge to block of the knockout opening and it stopped gurgling. Not sure if all my rambling makes sense for you or not lol.

Didn't change the return pump or flow. Air holes are clean and plenty big. I think There is too much air? Is that possible? Thats what it sounds like anyway. Before I think there was more back pressure at the bottom.

Well changing or cleaning the pipes will result in more flow because the new/cleaned pipes won't have as much friction loss therefore carry more water. I'm not sure from your OP...but if you removed a 90 elbow or reconfigured the drain line with less fittings, it would also carry more flow. I would adjust the air...either more or less until you can get it balanced again.

Okay now Im following you Jim. The durso used to enter some flex line then would droop down and the come back up into the sump. Now it just goes straight in......too much flow too fast.

Now correct me if I am wrong here, but I need to restrict the air and or slow things down right?

Oddly I just removed the 90 at the top of the Durson so now its just a straight stand pipe. The gurgle went away put now it just sounds like a loud drain.

I believe more flow diplaces/requires more air.

Lets bring this thread back from the dead because my durso has become very loud lately. Nothing has changed in my plumbing at all. Today I tried to drill a bigger hole in the cap, but that didn't do much. Maybe tomorrow I will give my return pump a bath in vinegar, maybe it isn't pushing out enough water to keep up with the durso. Since the tank is in my living room, my wife is going to kill me if I can't get this quiet soon.

Are you useing a Staford dorso ?? Pic would help. I made them on our tank,man they work. I can hear my skimmer in my stand more then I can hear my 18inch overflow.would be glad to offer parts list if you need it.

It is a standard durso, straight down from an overflow into a 90 and then directly into my sump. I have built them for each of my tanks for the last 10 years, but this is the loudest it has been. Actually now that I am typing this there isn't any sound at all. It seems to be sporadic as to when it wants to gurgle. Things like this drive me nuts. The tank has been running for around a year now, and the gurgle just started this week. I might just be slacking off on my pump maintenance, and maybe it isn't pushing up as much water as it once did.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Have you cleaned the teeth on the overflow lately. That usually made our tanks do what you described. After cleaning em it was back to sweet peace and quiet again. Food for thought

It's probably getting too much air. What I did with mine was tear off a piece from my Tacobell napkin and shoved it down the hole. I played with it until it got quieter, making the hole much smaller. It's been 2yrs now and my light fan is louder on my lights than my sump.
