Really really nice, very unique!

Well I did a water change yesterday and I think I added a little too much pH buffer because the rainsfords goby and smaller pipefish kicked the bucket. :(

Here are some updated shots of the tank. No FTS since the sponges died while I was on break and I had to trim them WAY back. Till it looks better I'm too ashamed to post a FTS.

Just curious why you had to use the pH buffer? I don't know squat about sponges. LOL I thought they were all non-photosynthetic??

Bongo Shrimp
01-22-2010, 10:50 PM
The pH buffer wasn't just for the sponges, some of which are actually photosynthetic. It was for the fish and shrimp too. The pH used to be about 7.6. Now it's up to about 8.0.

ReeferRob
01-22-2010, 11:06 PM
Wow that is really low pH:embarrased: how long has it been that low?

Bongo Shrimp
01-22-2010, 11:08 PM
It had been like that in both my tanks (reef and lagoon) for about 4 or 5 months. No big effects in either tank but I just got tired of it one day and decided to fight it head on. It worked.

ReeferRob
01-22-2010, 11:10 PM
Good thing you did! Were you getting very good growth out of the calcium based corals? Usually low pH means low Alk and slow-low calcification for the corals.
Have you tried opening a window in the room where the tank is for a few hours?

ReeferRob
01-22-2010, 11:11 PM
Not trying to give you a hard time by the way, just been battling some low pH myself. Maybe i am more worried about it than I should be?

Bongo Shrimp
01-22-2010, 11:13 PM
I have never opened a window, but the calcium based corals in my reef like the encrusting tequila sunrise monti (green with orange polyps) has been growing like a WEED! Like CRAZY!

ReeferRob
01-22-2010, 11:41 PM

How did I miss this thread....must have been the holidays.

Sweet tank! I realy like the sponges! I got 2 different white sponges i need to get rid of this sunday/monday- if you want to pick them up! Might still have the yellow one too, gotta take a good look....the yellow is kinda like a ball w/ thin spikes on it.

Ok, so I haven't done an update for a while but I will do one hopefully on tuesday when I recieve the latest additions. Two barrel (tube) sponges and an assortment of caribbean single stemmed plants! Plus I am waiting to get a BASKET star as well for my reef!

This is what the tube sponges will look like:

Sorry to hear about the sponge, that was quick. What happened just withered away?

Bongo Shrimp
02-16-2010, 10:14 PM
It actually died two days after I got it which makes me think it was not healthy to begin with. It started turning yellow and had all these white flakes coming off it. I then decided just to take it out BEFORE it nuked the tank. When I took it out though, I almost vomited from the smell. That's when I was sure it was dead ;).

Now here's something interesting- While cleaning my tank, I noticed that one of the Bongo Shrimp in my new pair might have eggs. I suspect so because one's abdomen is darker than the other's.

Blue line nudi. He eats flatworms and only flatworms. I got him to get rid of my slight flatworm infestation. He took care of it in a week and I took him back to Choice. The someone else had him (yes the same one) clean out their tank and I saw him back at Choice again a few weeks later. He was really really fat. Haven't seen him since the last time he sold from choice.

Since its a commensil shrimp what do you have for it to live on/with? What do they eat? Its a cool looking critter. Cant seem to find alot of info on it, found two places selling them that the care sheets differed alot.

get a sand sifter cucumber, i love mine :). and cool about the pedersons! didnt you get one before?

Bongo Shrimp
08-20-2010, 11:23 AM
The prob with the sand sifter is it goes under the sand and IDK if the shrimp would like that. And I had a pederson's before in my reef but it didn't make it. They will basically have the whole lagoon tank to them selves.

demonclownfish

Well one pedersons went missing at the vendor and didn't ship (don't ask) and the second presumably got eaten by my seahorse who was overly interested in it from the second I put it in the tank.

I need to get a cucumber! (LFS has some yellow sand sifters) Arriving on friday:
http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/SXM50/shrimp1_100831_PS.jpg

My source had two but someone already bought one. I really want two but I figured I'd be kicking myself for letting this pass by. Tomorrow I will call to see if there is anyway to get a second.

I can't believe I have one of these coming! Hopefully the seahorse won't see it. I may isolate it with the cucumber in a cage in the tank at first to see if the seahorse seems interested.

Not trying to flame or be a jerk but if you don't know their basic care requirements (what they eat), wouldn't it be nearly impossible (not to mention a little irresponsible) to try to keep them in captivity? I know you have had success with other difficult to keep inverts and the hobby need people pushing the envelope... it just it saddens me to see beautiful animals taken from the reef only to starve in our tanks.

I can only try. Plus I still have one. Hey, someone has to try. From all the research I have done I have tried to construct the best environment possible for them. I can't do much more. I do understand where you
re coming from but I think there's a difference between the guy who buys them because they look cool and does no research, and the guy who does as much research as possible, tries to replicate the environment and then gets them.

The thing that really gets me is that they both ate yesterday.:-|

Tom@HaslettMI
10-25-2010, 04:42 PM
There's totally a difference. I know you're not just impulse buying these and wouldn't get them if you didn't think you had a fair shot at keeping them. My main concern was you didn't know what they ate (I didn't know you had gotten them to eat til the last post). That means there's hope for the other one.

I actually have a lot of respect for your interest and efforts in keeping difficult species. As I read the earlier posts I was just a little like "WTF is he doing if he doesn't even know what they eat?!". Hopefully the remaining shrimp keeps on keeping on for you.

Yeah I guess I should have mentioned that earlier but yesterday I took tweezers and handed each a single thawed out frozen mysis shrimp (the little kind not PE). But anyhow they both held on to and appeared to be eating the shrimp for about ten minutes. Then they dropped it. But how big could their stomachs be?

The best I have found pertaining to their diet was the fecal pellets of their partner cucumber, slug, or snail ( hence why I gave them a turbo snail to be with.

The feather star on the other hand still is unknown when it comes to it's diet yet I and a few others have been able to keep them longer than their normal survival time in the aquarium before starvation catches up with them.

The only thing I can think of is that they need more area to pick around at such as in the rest of the tank rather than just in their little cage with a little piece of rock and a little bit of sand. But it is still a bit of an unknown.

Just in case anyone is tempted not to believe me, here is a picture of my one Emperor Shrimp holding a piece of mysis I handed him with tweezers. After feeding him today, I let him loose while he was riding on the turbo snail.

And yeah this weekend I will find something to replace the plants with.

Are you guys using chillers? If not how are you keeping the temp low enough to keep them? I thought they lived only in cooler water.

My tank just stays around 72-73F all the time with no heater. My heater on;y goes on sometimes at night to make sure it doesn't get too cold.

Ok, a little update.

Got home from a week vacation to find that my banggai cards have spawned and I am getting a super crazy awesome goby/pistol pair. Can anyone guess what kind? (slapshot can't guess since he knows already :D)

Here they are right before acclimation! Funny thing happened when I put them in. They dissapperaed for a little while and then I found the shrimp digging but no goby. Then I saw my randall's pistol(!) which I though was long gone and with him- the goby. So the shrimp is missing his big snapping claw but once he gets it back I bet he will "fix" things, if you know what I mean.

I haven't updated this thread in forever. I lost the pair of seahorses months ago due to an unknown cause. Now the tank is just a fuge with tons of my purple sponge growing in it. The mother colony is ~18" in diameter.

For now I have just been getting different nudibranchs to see if I can get any to eat my sponge or other sponges I find.
Heres a few pics:
