I just finished this piece a few minutes ago. I am using the acrylic base (which will be covered by substrate) and drilling / tapping to accept threaded nylon rods. It is really cool and also stable. It opens up a lot more possibilities. There are two pieces in my tank that I am considering redoing this way as well. I have 25 more pounds to go for building structures.

I finally found a technique that is stable (much better than zip ties or PVC for me) and easy to use. It is way less expensive than PVC fitting and not as bulky either.

This particular piece will be used for some table that I have. That overhang piece on the end I am reserving for either the Butanai I have or the SUhorsonai.

Do you have any details on the nylon rods? (Photos, source, etc.)

If I remember correctly you can get them straight from Marcos site?

Mike, are you drilling the rock to make holes or are you getting lucky with holes in the rock lining up properly and fishing the rod through it.

I purchased mine through US Plastics. They are the 1/4 inch with the nuts. Make sure to buy the threaded ones. I am using a 5/16 tap set up to drill and tap the acrylic base. The bases are 1/4 inch that I bought at the local plastics place for under 10.00 for three.

I am drilling as I need to. US plastics was a bit cheaper than the MArcos site when I bought mine. Not sure how it compares now. The rock is really nice. No pest at all!! The shapes are interesting as well. There are enough natural holes for corals which makes it easy to work with.

That is really cool. Are you using rods to elevate the rock off of the acrylic sheets? I can't quite tell from the photos.

This could also be done by bare bottom folks (put some pants on!). By using sheets of the stuff Jimsflies has protecting the bottom glass (can't remember what its called). I'm picturing a tank with levitating live rock!

Please keep us posted as I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.
