I used a recipe found on RC. Before my computer crashed I had it in my favorites now its gone havent really looked it up again. I used the recipe to make some rocks then I figured out what worked and went from there.
The recipe is basically 3/1 ratio of something to concrete mix. The something I used was crushed oyster shell and aragonite sand. You need to use portland cement 1, 3 or 5 I believe. I used 1 since its available at lowes or HD, its gray 3 & 5 are more white which seemed to be the prefered color during most of my research. I figured it didnt matter with the coralline going to grow on it. Obviously the more crushed oyster shell you use the more rough and porous its going to be. I used egg crate to make a "skeleton" to apply the agracrete to. If you have a large piece of glass you could just spread it on and then cut or break it to get it in the tank. Check out the RC thread and if you have any questions let me know I'll try to answer them.

Thanks! Its more blue then that in person. But with 4 of the bulbs being overdriven the special in the mix was just to.... um I dont know how to explain it. It just made everything look washed out. I tried putting the fiji purple in one of the overdriven spots bleached a bunch of my corals. That bulb must put out high par.

Well to answer what is the first coral I added it was a frag of raptors rainbows. This tank was an upgrade from a 32g that was up for over 2 years. I added a few corals every couple days once this tank was cycled.
And here are a few pics for you

Yes and another 8 polyps on the other side of the shelf.
http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr203/iyachtuxivm/DSCF3858.jpg
I like the finnex heater I had a smaller one on my 32g also and really liked it. I just swapped this one out it wasnt getting tank above 74. 6 months I had to change it.....the other one is still working in the basement on my mess after about 3 years so hope it was just a fluke.
Mess = Algae filled 10 gallon with a 40g rubbermaid tote full of LR, cheato, and a red sea junk skimmer trying to grow asterina stars/pods.

very nice setup, i was very interested in some DIY rock. Is the mixture you used heavy? I had been looking at the ultimate DIY rocks on RC using salt to make it more porous/ lighter. Those gorgonian are beautiful.

Thanks Chris! The basement sump is going good just still need to build the stand for the seagrass tank. Ran out of time! That was harder then I thought it would be. 1st I had to rewire the basement. 2nd had to cut a hole in the wall under my tank ( ever hear of two pieces of 3/8 drywall with a 1/4 plaster over it?). 3rd drill two holes in the floor in between the walls for drain and return under my tank while its still running.(should have thought of this before i set the tank up) 4th Build stands for three seperate tanks one for drain and skimmer one for sump/frag tank and the refugium/seagrass tank. I havent taken pics in a while I'll get some of the new set up today ( at least whats done) and try to post tonight if I have time!

Its basically a poseidon ps4 pump. I thought long and hard on what I was going to do to control it from main floor I decided to just deal with it in the basement no biggy really. The reason was the lack of room under the tank and detrious build up in the sump. Its only been a week but the algae in the tank has vanished. ( I guess it helps that I basically did an 80% water change adding that much volume). 45gal more on wednesday well it may be a little less depending on amount of sand/rock.
Thanks BTW

Looking good Jaime! Definitely alot different then when I was over. What kind of seagrasses are you planning and where you getting them... still thinking about getting some different ones myself :)

Take care and keep up the good work man I think this set up is really going to help you and your tank (not that your tank really needs any help it looks flippin sweet already :) )

Thanks for the compliment. Thinking oar grass, manatee grass, shoal grass, red mangroves and some really nice macros. Mostly from reef cleaners but I have another source too we will see how it goes.

Thanks again guys!

What's the temp for the pipe fish?

What's the temp for the pipe fish?

The average temp for my system is about 77. Since I put this basement sump up temps have been running cooler. With the lights on the temp in the reef is 78-79. The fuge where the pipes are now is 76ish it fluctuates between 75.5 and 77. The seagrass tank has only been up for a few hours and I have not turned on the lights yet so that will make a difference on the system. I am hopeing it stays around the mid 70s mark. If it does I will most likley get some other harder to keep (temp) sea horses and pipes.

So I decided to go check system temps before I finished this. Stuff in the basement is 74.8 reef is 75.5 heater kicks on at 74 so I think we are good. Need to see what the lighting for the seagrass tank does next.

Just a small no pic update. Temp is stable at 76 with lights on and about 75 off.
Thinking about only running 4 overdriven T5 instead of the 6 currently in use. 660 ballast and a 430(?), drop the 430. Corals are extreamly light in color since I replace 3 bulbs. (I did 1 a week for three weeks) Anyone have thoughts on this?

My zoas really lightened up too under T5's. they were alot darker either under MH or PC's.

Zoos everything lightened up after the bulb change. Its not like it bleached out totally or anything but it really lightened up. The bulbs were about 1 year old and they were on the tank at least 1.5 months without corals only 5-6 hours per day but still.:stars:

I just placed an order for some macros too. pretty excited! That reminds me, I need to add some more sand where the oar grass is going. I got the palm caulerpa and the rest mostly is calcerous stuff, shaving brush ect. and a quart of gracilaria. I cant believe how cheap their mangroves are compaired to other places.

The short body pipefish is in with him and they get along great. The short body pipe is alot smaller then him but not as small as the dragon face. The dragonface is still in the fuge until he gets a bit bigger and starts to eat frozen. Yes I said he singular one didnt make it I think parasites. I dont have any pics of the short body yet I will try to get some.

they have a skeleton like a pipe organ they grow out of.. so more like encrusting. I got them from Lucid props. I went down there (ohio) a couple weeks ago to pick up a pipe fish and saw them in one of Zachs tanks he had a couple pieces. They ship if you havent ever heard of them. He has alot of nice stuff got that purple and green plate while I was there too.

Are you running like all blues now or was this before the daylight bulbs kicked on, looks alot bluer then when I saw it. Looks good though, just kinda washed with the blue...

Normally not a fan of them, but I gotta say I love that new plate you got man it really pops!

Thats with just the icecap led on. I dropped the 430 ballast and switched to the icecap for dawn/dusk. I love the light show everything just glows! To bad its so hard to capture especially the reds and pinks.

heh I was just looking at that video and thinking "thats gotta be LED blue, nothing else looks quite like it"

Does the icecap led provide enough light for coral growth/ life support?

I am not sure. Wonder if anyone ever checked it with a par or lux meter. I know it supplies a lot of 420-460nm which is good for corals but dont know on how much usable radiation it produces. But since I dropped the 430 my corals are looking better, I dont think its because of the led but the decrease in lighting.

Looks sweet man, definitely grown!

I think on the mangroves I read somewhere when the Mag is low (and they use it up too) their leaves will shrivel/yellow.... might wanna check into it could be the issue

Thanks Chris! I think that the mangrove pod is just not going to bloom never sprouted leaves. But its still growing roots so I dont know. Mag is over 1500, the other two are sprouting leaves and look very happy.

Oh I thought you said before the leaves on one were shriveling, but yeah if they are I don't think mag is the issue lol Hopefully since the other one is still growing roots it will start sprouting someday. Everything else is lookin great so keep doing what your doing man its definitely working for ya :)

Thanks! Going to try a reef video next.

Ok, was reading some so far unread (for me) threads today. Your tank is SWEET!! I live your scapeing & coral color/variety. So the Yellow angler fish, He's in a different tank? Are all your tanks plumbed together? I love, love. . . love all the green & the pipe fish in your fuge. It is imo just as beautiful as your main dt. Your tank is kinda like a "what a tank looks like in a lot of years" love the before and after shots in there. Very inspirational for someone like me who is just starting a 150g and its soo gray & empty. Thanks for sharing w/ everyone!
Wow,

Well still in hiding. Found 2. 1 mia. Still no way to get a good pic. If the Female squarespot anthias would quit power tripping I think they would be more apt to come out. They did zip out and grab a couple bits of food at feeding time well at least two did.

Well to answer a question posed by Jim.... The 75g is no longer up. I had a unfortunate kalk issue that killed a few corals and a few fish and I continued having issues with algae on the aggracrete. I think and have a little proof now that the aggracrete was leaching phosphates in to the water. The proof was that everything that survived the kalk issue and a few new things are living in a 100g rubbermaid in the basement sump system that is still unchanged, just took the 75g off line added the 100g moved critters. All of the sudden after the 75g came off line the phosphates went to zero (still using the gfo) this came with a few problems in itself as 0 phosphates isnt good. (checked with a hanna meter) I took the gfo off line and in about a week the phosphates slowly climbed up to about 0.06 (i feed alot of pellets and frozen). I cut back the gfo to about a quarter cup (from 1 cup) and tonight the phosphates is back to 0.01. I couldnt get it below .08 before the 75g came down.

Now after taking the 75g down my nitrates have climbed to about 10-15 never been above 0-5 before. Right now I dont have a very large sand bed or live rock filter system either. I took out 100+lbs of sand and at least that much liverock when the 75 came down so I guess its to be expected. The remaining fish are fat and happy except the jerk fish shes isolated and hates me still fat and eating well though. The wrasses (2) eat from my hand I know crazy right. The leopard wrasse hid for over a week in the 75g after everything was out and on the night it was finally comming down no live rock left except for the aggracrete back ground, no corals no other fish or inverts she just popped up. I had scrounged through the sand every day for 5 days no sign. Anyway really glad I waited I could have drained it and she would have died. She eats anything I feed and some things I dont:doh: oh well shes a wrasse. :love3: I picked up an eibli mimic tang and its doing great no good pics though shes going in this along with everyone else too ofcoarse.
