View Full Version : Nano Reef Can it still be a Nano at 40 gallons???
I measured the area where I would like to put the small reef (pending wifes approval). Could fit a 30Lx22W214H there with no problems. That comes out to 40 gallons. Great Lakes Aquariums does starfire now and rimless so that is who I sent a quote request to. Want a back corner overflow on it. Likely will do a small RD return and a pretty silent skimmer. My wife huge complaint is always the noise. Neddless to say it will be a long process to aquire everything (unless there is a resurgence in SPS frag interest down the road - LOL).
Want to do this as an LPS/ Zoa reef with a pair of nice clown and maybe a mandarin.

No - the typically accepted sizes are 5.5G-30G for a Nano and anything 5G and smaller is a Pico

When compared to the originals, we all basically have nanos.......
For me it will be a Nano LOL
Got the quote back and with three sides starphire + overflow + rimless with overflow box = 370.00
Going to deposit on this next Friday and it will be four weeks un til pick up.

I have heard that under 30 gallons is the common acepted rule, but I dont call a nano till its under 20...just doesnt seem right to me for some reason..

I'd seen it bumped up to 40 in the past couple years as some of the companies making all in ones in the 30-40 range become more popular with the nano crowd. If you look at the description of this forum that I established when I set up CR, you will see I have it less than 40 gallons for the "Nano Forum".

Oh yeah...I see what you are saying. I agree- all these companies making the all in one tanks, bigger and bigger are causing the term nano to stretch it seems.
There are more and more comapnies making bigger all in ones all the time :)

I agree Mike. I know it'll be too big for the Nano Contest, but I consider anything under 50 a nano.

Anything less than an ocean can be considered a nano tank IMO.http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/images/smilies/oldman.gif

yeah aren't all tanks just nano's in comparison to the ocean?
But I get the standard when applied to sales of said tanks
in question.
