it is actually pretty easy to do yourself

I did mine and went super simple with just 2 chambers and one bubble catcher wall (3 baffles)

skimmer/fuge is one chamber and the return is the other

ive heard its pretty easy and read up but as a full time student and mom i have time contraints. plus i have no idea what to do with it once its made.... lol

I can and would be happy to do it, but my location may not be to desirable due to extreme shipping expense.

i found someone about an hour away from me who has a 30 gal sump for $50 it has a hole drilled for the pump and im not sure what to do with the sump once i get it

It sounds like you need to do some more research.

a Sump typically sits in a stand and acts as a biological filter. some are Two-chambered, some are three, some are more (with frags and such).

If your tank is not drilled for an overflow and return you will need to purchase a HOB (hang on back) overflow, and plumb a return line. You will also need a return pump to move the water that gravity deposits into the sump.

There are a multitude of places around the net to research the function as well as the design of a sump. Just google "reef sump" and you'll get a billion hits.

If it is a pre-drilled sump, it sounds like there was an external return pump. Remember that when searching for pumps as some are submerged only and will quickly fail.

i havent made any solid buys yet but so far im looking at a 30 gal drilled sump a mag 7 pump and a HOB overflow. i still have to figure out how to set it up and what to put in the sump

RedfordReefer
03-04-2010, 02:59 PM
I have a 90gal Display with a 29g sump (10gal Fuge with LS/LR in-sump), and I have a Mag9.5. The person I got the tank from said he had a mag18 on it.

Check head-loss and such before you purchase the mag-7. It might be on the low-side for your setup.

What are you running for a display tank btw?

scubamomma
03-04-2010, 03:14 PM
65 reef got softies lr and 2 small fish was gona buy wet/dry filter but then thought id go sump. the pumps are super expensive

tazzy695
03-04-2010, 03:19 PM
typically a mag 7 will not give you appropriate flow to run as a return pump also mag pumps are expensive to run and draw a lot of power I think the mag 7 is 60 or 70 wats of power

actually taam sio makes some good return pumps that would work well for you and be cheaper to run then the mag

but if you want to spend the money to get a top shelf pump then there is tunze with low power draw and strong flow

RedfordReefer

Sumps are quite easy to fabricate (can be done in two days with Silicone drying times).

As Mine is going in my Stand, I have limited space to work with.

My stand is 46"W X 26"T X 16" Deep.

I picked up a pre-drilled acrylic sump from someone that is 36"W X 16"T X 12X deep and it works out great. I still have a bit of room in my stand for things I use a lot (test kits and such).

i found those pumps on this site any idea how big of a size. i have a tight budget which is why im asking for help from experienced people so i dont make a dumb purchase!

^those pumps are all powerheads- they will not be used as water pumps for a return.

If your lookin to save a little cash- I would recomend the Rio hyperflow, or the catalina aquatics pumps. Decent pumps with a great price.

I've heard good things about the Quiet One brand. At least until you can scrape up the cheddar for a Mag drive.

Originally, My intention for my return was a Quiet One 4000.

The quiet one is a pretty good quality pump, from what I have heard.

jimsflies
03-04-2010, 04:00 PM
Look into the maxijet utility pump. I was looking on eBay and found them pretty cheap.

Eheim is what I use and have had good luck. 1262 is pro what you'd want.

Hopkins
03-04-2010, 04:29 PM
I agree with Jim on the Eheim. You could drop kick that pump across the room and it would still work.

scubamomma
03-04-2010, 04:39 PM
those eheim pumps are like 160 bucks. im looking for something to start me out that i can upgrade later. also i am buying an over flow from a guy for $10 so i got that part

ReeferRob
03-04-2010, 04:40 PM
The Quiet One pumps are still more affordable, have less power draw, and run cooler than the Mag and Ehim.
I have heard great things about the Maxi Utility pumps but a bit leary as production has recently gone from I believe Italy to China or Korea. Reef Builders did a write up on it just a few weeks ago, and commented on the much lesser quality and water pumping power since the change.

Whats the tank volume and sump volume? Are you going to be growing chaeto for nutrient export, or is this pump going to be a means of flow for the tank?

scubamomma
03-04-2010, 05:57 PM
tank 65 sump is going to be 30g i have no idea what to put in the sump someone said i needed one because a HOB filter cant support a reef

ReeferRob
03-04-2010, 06:03 PM
Okay we have roughly the same size tank. I run the QO4000 for my tank, I originally selected this pump because I was gonna grow macro algae. Slightly slower flow through the sump/refugium allowed a longer dwell time for the macro algae to absorb the excess nutrients I was hoping to export. To fast of a flow is counter productive for this application.

Now on the other edge of the sword, if your not going to grow macro algae you can go to a more powerful one to assist with flow for the tank, therefor requiring less power heads for flow that could be obtrusive to the rest of the view.

The other thing to think of when selecting a water pump is the size of the drain that will drain the water from the main tank back down to the sump. If the pump pushes more water than your drain can handle, its a very messy situation.

scubamomma
03-04-2010, 06:56 PM
oh man this is so complicated you lost me lol see why i tried to find someone to do it for me

Sir Patrick
03-04-2010, 09:56 PM
^ ask the person who you are getting the overflow for $10 what the flow rating (gallons per hour) and we can go from there. The gallons per hour your overflow can handle will directly influence the gallon per hour (gph) of the return pump to advise for you.

We can go step by step on this one with you- and you will learn it for next time around.

If the seller doesnt know the GPH that the overflow is rated at, post the diameter of the overflow pipe- and we can figure that out for you.

I would recomend a 5o gallon long with a bubble trap and three chambers. You can find 50s used cheap. They are realy easy to set up I could talk you through it toledo is a bit of a trip.

Its hard to fit everything in a 30 gal and you want your return chamber as large as possible for top offs Belleville is probably an hour from the zoo

I run a 29g fuge for my 90g DT with no problems at all. It also leaves room to have a 9g top off tank under the same stand. Stand is 4" long. You just need to plan you baffle spacing around what ever equipment you will be running.
My spacing is
9" intake chamber. I have my phosban reactor and skimmer in it
15" fuge. Cheato,LS and Lr
5" return chamber.

Very simple setup. Basic 29g tank with 2 glass baffle from Greatlakes Aquarium. I dont run a bubble trap and have ZERO micro bubbles in the DT.

Here is what it looks like put together. Baffle spacing is just the space between the glass dividers.
They are also in Warren.

Live rock and live sand in one chamber acts as a biological filter and cheato or macro algea in another uses up excess nutriants through photosynthesis

Ok it is a little messy down there but I hope this helps
Water flows through the grey box and into the far left chamber. it then flows into the middle chamber and finally flows into the last chamber where the pump, pumps it back to the tank. I have some filter material in the grey box. The Live rock and cheato act as a natural filter. Some of the real guru's on here may be able to explain the natural filtration a little better lol.

HOB filters work if you keep the bioload down and keep up on water changes.
