I curently have a asm g-3 with the gate and mesh mod. my question is if I was to drill and add a second pump ( i have a sedra 3500) would that help to increase the effectiveness of the skimmer?
I was thinking either just driling one hole and adding the second pump, or drilling two holes and useing it as a recirculation pump with an additional venturi ( if that would even work) any other touhght and ideas are much appreciated
Also would doing this alow it to be moved to a bigger system I currently have a 180g but am going to be adding a basement sump/fuge with two 100g rubbermaids and possiby tying into my newly aquired 50g breeder

Drill it recurculating! I would.....if I wanted to mod your skimmer.

if anything I would do recirculating however I don't know if this would actually increase efficiency of this skimmer I run a g3 on my 80g reef and it pulls the crap out but is not modded in any way I would love to do the gate mod though
from my understanding most recirculation skimmers use a venturi intake on just the recirculation pump not on both pumps the intake pump is used for water intake and is typically a small pump to run the water through slower to make it get skimmed for a longer period of time

I too have an ASM g3 mesh modded and it pulls very well. I run it on my 100 will aprox 130 gallons of total volume. However I think that your proposed changes will increase your water volume enough to make your skimmer too small no matter what mods you do. I will also point out that the acrylic that the skimmer is made of is very brittle and likely more brittle due to prolonged exposure to saltwater. The risk of cracking the skimmer body while drilling is considerable.

Ok, thank, I was just hopeing that I wouldn't have to spend the $$$ on a skimmer and could put it toward other equipment. but thats fine i'll start looking for a bigger skimmer now.

plenty of people looking for skimmers in that size
I may even be interested in your extra pump if and when you sell as I run a g3 also
