My mushrooms are taking over my tank. How do I get rid of some of them? They get over 7 inches wide when they expand! I'm noticing that a lot of them have 2 mouths, why do they have 2 mouths? I've tried to scrub them off of the rocks but they just keep coming back.
They are starting to crowd / cover my other corals.
Any ideas on how to get rid of them would be appreciated!

they are huge purple / blue mushrooms. There are pics in the gallery.
I will trade them, but they are attached to all of the huge rocks in my tank. If I trade the rocks they are on I won't have any LR left, lol.

Mushrooms are unfond of heavy direct water flow... try placing your powerheads/returns indirectly or (directly if you want) at the shrooms... hopefully, they'll begin to recede to less turbulant areas of the LR.

You have BLUE-PURPLE mushrooms and you DON"T want them??????
What do you want in trade!! ;)
Don't try to srub them those thing go for alot off $$$$$ Take a small piece of rubble rock and just set it right in the middle of the ones you don't want and they will move onto the rock then just take the rock out and trade it in or send it to me!! a small rock at the LFS here is about 30-50.00
The reason they have 2 mouths is they are going to split.. and when you scrub them off you inadvertantly leave some of the foot behind and it grows a new one.
Mushrooms are really NOT a coral! :peace: They are really smooth anemones.. They tend to slowly move to better spots and when they do they leave a bit of the "foot" behind. The left over foot grows a new shroom. They can reproduce in several ways... moving around and leaving the foot.. spliting in 2 (your 2 mouths) or spawing ..They grow a little bubble along the disc and this is released and becomes a new one.
The only way to get rid of them is to remove the rock they are on and there isn't any way to be sure you got them all... They are sneaky little critters! and all it takes is one hidding in the back that you can't see! :evil2:
hope this helps!

I'll start making a list of all who want some. As soon as I figure out how to get them off of the biggest pieces of LR I'll start trying to ship them out. The rocks they are on will NOT fit into a thermos, lol.
If I trade them attached to the rock they are on, I will have no LR left. I'm not kidding. That's how many mushrooms I have. I need to pick up some batteries for the digicam and I will post some pics.

Angie, we learned a great trick for getting the shrooms off of rock.... using a hemostat and appling light to medium clamping pressure on the 'stem' as close to the rock and it will release cleanly from the rock almost immediately.. Pretty slick trick. BTW apparently Menards carries them for about $6 or F&S has them for a bit cheaper.
(This tip brought to you by GT :) )

To everyone who wanted mushrooms:
I will keep a list of who wants some. As soon as I get them off of my rocks and the weather warms up, I will start letting people know I'm ready to ship them out.
Thanks to everyone who wants them. I wasn't quite expecting that.
If only I could get xenia to grow like the mushrooms
