I was leaving Home Depot today and something caught the corner of my eye as I was leaving the store.... Phillips is offering PAR 38 and PAR 30 LED bulbs!! Looks like there is 8 LEDs per bulb of the 2 watt variety. Color temp is a "cool white" of 4200.

They also made an OUTDOOR version of the PAR 38 bulb, which would be interesting for aquarium usage.

Looks like some DIYer needs to experiment with buying these and swapping in some Cree, Edison, or Semi LEDs.

I saw them as well, very interesting. Perhaps I could set up the 15 gallon on with or two of these and see what happens.

If you can/know someone that deals with a Phillips wholesaler, there LED Bulbs have a longer life 40,000 HRS than the "Same' Phillips Bulbs sold at Home Depot 25,000 HRS.

This information came from the Phillips Salesperson I deal with.
The price is comparable but with a longer life.

Actually, a local guy (shelby twp, MI) did this over a year ago.

He sells them through an aquarium store online called Nanotuners which gets good reviews and definitely is on the cutting edge of lighting technology in reefs. I've seen the lights and they're pretty cool.

There's also a ripoff version that just came out a few weeks ago (I say ripoff because it's literally the exact same thing but with fewer optics choices) that is available from ecoexotic .

Hi :waves:

The lamps that are showing up in the stores are getting better, but they still lack a lot of quality, output, and longevity. Like it was mentioned earlier in this thread, the life expectancy of these lamps is a lot lower than they should be. LED temperature are run to the edge, and life suffers as a result. The consumer market doesn't care to the same degree that the industrial and commercial market, where we source our lamps from. Barring any manufacturer defect, we are comfortable claiming 50,000 hour usable life on our lamps.

For those looking to play with some of the cheaper versions, I suggest getting them on ebay, not Home Depot. You can get similar performance for quite a bit less. There is also a greater chance of being able to modify it by looking for Cree based lamps. Edison and Nichia versions make it much harder to source LEDs. The Philips and GE lamps being sold right now don't have LEDs that you will be able to source easily.
