The build begins!

Where to start???? Ah yes Big thanks to RedFordReefer for a lots of ideas on the stand, and Sir Patrick just for being awesome.

This build thread is going to be updated as things are updated on the build. ITs going to happen over the next two months.

-90g 48x18x24 - tank maker unknown, corner overflow
-stand selfmade 52x25x32.5
-skimmer MSX 200 or SWC 200, same thing already have it.
-2x 175watt MH in hamilton cabo reflectors

-------

Still need to get
-mag 12 return pump
-sump 40 - 50g
- 2x koralia evolution 1400 powerheads
-plumbing
-rock and sand

Right now i have the tank, skimmer, and just built the stand.
Now for pictures.

The stand isn't completely finished, still have to finish it with some stained wood.

Gotta make sure it holds water before i actually build the stand for it.
NO ONE TELLS YOU HOW MUCH OF A PAIN IT IS TO DRAIN ALMOST 90G of water!!!!!!!!!

Update time.

well today i went to home depot despite the rain and crappy day and got some more stuff to skin the stand.

By no means is it done yet, i still have to trim (cover my mistakes lol), stain and seal everything.

I have yet to figure out how i want to get inside the tank, either doors or what, i need ot take a few days rest from it and sleep on it. Any ideas?

I went with a very thin oak paneling.

I tried my best to measure everything right, a few things are a little off but i can hopefully correct that with some trim. The oak panels are just help temp. in place with a few tack nails.

Let me tell you the 52"x25x32.5" dimensions made for interesting cuts lol.

Alright i need some help and some input.

For paneling i went with a thing oak panel, its maybe like 5/16" thick just cause it was going to be a skin. now that i look at it i dunno what im going to do for accessing underneath the stand.

I need to use this trim.

Yeah. I do have an Idea. :)

I'll have to research it as I can't think of the name. It's like a Norse hinge or something. I can design it, but i don't know what it's called.

I'll take some time Thursday to design it out in sketchup and get you a diagram.

Left section is going to be the drain line and the skimmer section. The actual drain from the skimmer is going to spill into the return section, figured it wouldn't hurt

Middle is the return

Right side is going to be the fuge.

Fuge side, Reef paradise had this set up as the drain section, im going to take out the class corner thing they had for hte filter sock to open up the fuge section more.

looking as the way its set up i would cut out that glass corner like you said and put the skimmer there and your heater and carbon bag if you run carbon and rock rubble, then second chamber put your fuge area, then there is the bubble trap to the 3rd area which is where the return will be.

just a suggestion, and if the skimmer wont work because of that make an egg crate stand so the outlet on the skimmer can hang over that wall.

I think what im going to do is leave the skimmer where its at cause it'll leave it in about 10" of water, i would put it in the opposite chamber but if i raise the skimmer up anymore i wont be able to get the collection cup off lol.

ill just move the return of the skimmer back into the first chamber. and put the return in the center, i like the fact of having a bigger section for a fuge.

you could remove the front part of the stand and just attach it with 2 hinges on the top so you will have easy access to the filter, and still have the look you are going for. You could put the sticky foam strips around it to help keep it quiet.

Figuring out your skimmer, and being able to remove the cup, as well as remove the whole thing is very important!! I have made the mistake before in the past, while over excited. :thumbs_down:

no my skin wood isn't thick enough for magnets :-(

alright well i figured out my door situation.

I kinda browsed around for a bit at people stands and went with a simple hinge look.
Decided to cut the skin to the same size as the stand than use the innner cut out for the doors.

Used a jigsaw to make the cut, and hoped for the best.

didnt really get many pics of the cutting and fitting but more of the final product of the doors and such.

than did some staining, and sealed the inside of the stand. didnt get pics of that cause i still have to silicone some of the seams, so that'll be tomorrow.

alright the stand is basically 95% finished, got a few things i need to do but not really important at this stage.

i figured it would kinda make the trim look like less of an eye sore.

i think i might even make a matching one for the top trim as well but that'll be a couple months down the road when im settled with the tank.

bit of an update, did some light hanging and finished my durso up.

I felt like the raw aluminum reflector was a bit, well gaudy. so i decided to paint it black, made a little wood plate thing to hang the reflector from, and painted that black. here the pics. its looking pretty good, oh and got the front piece of trim stained and sealed.

alright well here is a small update.

As some of you know i've had 3 fish jump in the past week n half. Since i wanna do this tank right i figure i would fallow Jim's write up of making some cheap covers for the tank.

I think it turned out nicely! and will def stop fish from jumping out.

I picked up some dry rock from Mike on here, and thought i'd get some sort of aquascape plan going.

I had always thought that using egg crate as a good thinkg to put the rock on was the way to go but talking to Jim im not to sure... so the egg crate might go, i can say though it make stacking rock easy.

Im going for a minimalist look.

Here is the first layout i came up with... didn't like it to much but here it is...

anyone else got some comments on my half aquascape so far. it looks much better in person and i really like the island idea.

If you want to make the rock go further and keep water flowing around it you can drill and use the nylon rod method. You dont have to worry as much about rock slides that way.

alright well here is an update with no pics.. cause not to much has changed. Plus i didn't bring my camera home with me.

-All plumbing was finished and got all my hardware i needed to start the tank.
Flow - Koralia evolution 1400's x2
heaters - two 250's stealth heaters
return - quiet one 4000

-Tank is filled and system running.
Had posted a thread on problems with my durso but figured it out, if you ever have an issue with ur Durso look up my name i started a thread and found the solution.

Tested everything, no leaks from the plumbing no nothing.
Tested a poweroutage and no overflowing or even coming close.

So tank is cycling. Skimmer was running and already pulled a little bit of stuff out. things a beast and i love it. A couple of weeks ill make the switch over and add my other two tanks to the 90g. Than ill have pics to put up.

Looks good EMU. A bit to minimalist on the rock for me (personally I would do 2 islands), but once the other tanks are joined in I am sure it will look a little fuller... but hey if you like it thats what really matters (not that I hate it lol) ;)

I will be doing to islands, just the other rock are in my tanks that are currently set up.

I love your aqua scape mike. I dont like when peope just throw a bunch of rock in and it looks like just well a wall of rock. Im enjoying the one island thats already in it. It looks nice. And some nice places for fish to hide.

alright a question i want to get out of the way.

So the rock i have in the tank now that is just cycling away is dry rock that came out of Mikes tank.

about 40lbs, im doing a minimalist look.

Im going to do two islands one on the right and one on the left. I have 2 tanks that are going to be taken down and put into the 90g

All said ill have about another 40-50lbs or more of LR to put in that tank.

WHen i take down the tanks will the Live rock that i've had in my tanks for 7+ months be able to handle a fish or two when i do the switch over?

I know the Dry Rock that is cycling wont be fully cycled but will the LR i have now take on the burden of the added fish? Its going to be two firefish and likely a single occy clown.

You got a running HOB filter, right? Keep it all wet, and toss it on the back of the new tank. That will soften the cycle further.

a question for you all..

the doors to my stand, well actually jsut one of the doors is growing a little mold on it, its actually in a spot thats close to the skimmer. How can i stop this from happening?

I painted the inside of my stand w/ white primer (Kilz brand) and sealed it too w/ polyurathane when I poly'd the stand. Might want to seal the door somehow, or create a movable plexiglass splash guard around the skimmer.

Tanks have all been transferred. Stock added. Coral Added. Everything seems happy and Good for now.

In the pics. DONT MIND THE HEATER. its just there when i was cycling the tank. i'll be moving it to the sump with the other one in the next few days.

You might want to lower your powerheads some and angle them up a little more tho eventually for more surface agitation.... unless your already getting a ton, but thats just the way I like mine I guess lol

Kole tang is a lot more active now! swimmin around, enjoying the 4ft tank.

Starry blenny is likin the rocks pokes its head out every now and than.

I was about to type up that i havent see the purple fire fish but i looked up and there they were. so there getting used to the new tank slowly but atleast they're alive.

and the back occy well he was used to the tank as soon as i put him in, seems kinda lost without his partner... i need to find him a mate.

Nice! I love my Kole too. That is a great pic. They swim so clumsily lol unless they are going for something. I think mine killed my lawnmower blenny though. He used to chase the blenny every chance he got, then one day there was just no more blenny.

welp got a new clown for my lonely BW.

Very pretty perc. hopefully it gets more black and becomes somewhat of an Onyx, it would be sweet if htese made babies!

I would try my hand at breeding them for sure but i know it might be a long time from now.

Yes the birdsnest is really that color maybe not nearly as bright as the picture but pretty darn close!

got a new fish today. bought an orange shoulder tang from moby's.
Sadly i didn't find out untill the fish was in my tank that he has a little bit of LLE going on.
acclimated him for about an hour, put him in the tank and its like he's been there for a while. 30 mins after adding him i wanted ot see if he would eat because of the LLE.
and he ate right away and ate a lot. Swimming around, hanging out with the kole tang. Such a beautiful fish.

so was I. I put him in and they were just hanging close to each other and no such fighting or anything, its almost like the kole didn't know he was around lol. But i've been watching him for the past 2 hours or so and he is doing awesome, i fed some pellets about an hour ago and he was destroying them! im happy with him and hopefully he recovers from the LLE nicely.

Thanks! Yea i like the scape too it def makes for some great swimming room for the fish, i can tell.
The wrasse according to websites, it gets about 6" mature.
And funny you say that about the elegance.. because they are hosting it. lol

thanks man i appreciate it! Yea it does suck, he was doing great but i knew something bad might happen after how he's been acting. He would freak when the lights would go out so he jumped into the over flow this time....

alright welp made a change with the tank. I replaced the lighthing, went from 175w MH's to an 8 bulb tek T5 fixture. Gonna change some of the bulbs up soon.

welp i wanted to hang the fixture instead of using the legs that it came with. I wanted to do this so i could have access to inside the tank incase i needed to reach in. To make this even easier i wanted to put the cables the like hang from on some sort of track so i could slide it back and have easier access without having to worry about holding the light out of the way.

i went with these desk type rollers, slim profile and seemed like they would hold up the weight of the tank.

welp where to start...haven't updated in a long time and a lot has changed.

around april/may my filters on my RO went bad and caused a nitrate spike in my tank cause things to kinda go wrong and this is where it all basically started. Started batttling cyano and i knew it was cause of the nitrate spike.

welp fast forward to august ish... i guess i had a lapse in judgement and decided that since the entire month of july the ac was on causing low PH so i dosed extra alk to keep the ph stable..well i guess i over saturated the water.

my mag was super low, ph super high and calcium super low...things were not looking good in my tank to say the least..ph hovering around 8.6-8.7.....

few sps dead later i cracked down and got my levels stable and now the sps are happier.....

but the tank swings and sub par water conditions had a toll on my powder brown tang who got some sort of ich which he succumbed too. After that it was downhill most of the rest of the fish caught what he had....

-powder brown tang
-perc
-b/w occy
-swallow tail angel
-starry blenny
-potters angel

remaining three fish are healthy...

-orange shoulder tang
-leopard wrasse
-coral beauty

im not getting out of the hobby but if the rest of the fish perish than i might consider it for a while till i own my own place....though the odds of me getting out are slim...alteast my coral look better and i didn't loose all of them lol

and the cyano finally went away so 2 wins for me... but a lot of big losses

im gonna wait a month or so untill i think about adding a new fish back to the system....

but i might go wrasse heavy.. 2-3 more leopards and a few fairy wrasses.

i would post pics but, im a shamed of the tank right now and its not how i want it, gotta trim some dead coral too.

thanks everyone but i suppose the good news is the remaining fish are still healthy and alive, no signs of any declining health in them. Im gonna try my best to wait till the end of the month to get a couple new fish for the tank.

i would have some updated pics but my corals are in recovery mode so im kinda ashamed of that.

only 4 sps were hit hard but sadly they were my biggest pieces. 2 digis, still some healthy flesh so should recover. a green slimer, was able to save a frag but its only a frag compared to the mini colony it was growing into. there are still a few patches of healthy tissue left... so for fun im gonna keep it in my display to see what comes of it. Than a nice growing colony of a stag, lost about half of it, though still have a nice chunk left, i made two frags and cut a lot of the dead tissue away as there was a lot.....here's a pic of what was clipped off.....

Alright haven't updated in a while and took some pics the other day thought i'd post them up

my tank did have some troubles a couple months ago so its been recovering from that.
lost 6 fish and only had my leopard wrasse, coral beauty, and orange shoulder left.

waited a month or so to restock and through a connection i bought 4 lubbocks wrasse and a bipartus leopard
for some reason 3 of the lubbocks vanished but the one that remains is in good health and eats well.

The bipartus was eating frozen within a day! EXCITING! that was about 2 weeks ago so i feel like im in the clear.

bought a sixline and a starry blenny which are doing good as well.

than friday i picked up a potters wrasse, this will be my third, third times a charm.

as a little test today at some point im gonna clean my skimmer cup up and see how much gunk i can collect over a 4-5 span and do the same with the new skimmer when i put it in to see if the new skimmer makes a difference in whats collected.

welp got the sump drained yesterday and yanked out the old skimmer and put the new one in. ill take a video soon when its done breaking in. but its a nice skimmer, dead quiet.

The little gate valve type deal it has is kinda nifty. Also has an adjustment for how much air you let the pump take in so you can really fine tune this skimmer.

working great, got it tuned. Been pullin stuff daily, maybe a couple cups worth every couple days.

Well a little update, mainly because im upset.

Got the bubble magus doser the other week and finally got it setup, not a bad little piece of equipment, makes life much easier. Levels are staying pretty consistant, might have to tweak it a bit to get it to where i want it but def gives me a peice of mind now.....


Got a new light for the fuge, my chaeto just has not been growing but i know there is a bit of excess nutrients in the water cause im getting slight dustings of cyano and this random aglae still growing in my frag tank... so it has to be the light, at one point n time my chaeto grew insanely. So i did a bit of research and got the ole shop light from HD and a 5000k color spectrum bulb. So will see if this helps at all, if not, hey its a new bulb.

Skimmer....oh this skimmer....been working wonderfully since i got it, pulling sludge and doing its job than the other day the pump decided to get crazy loud for some reason, sounded like something was wrong internally so i took the pump out and took it apart, can't find anything wrong with it. Been in contact with skimz who sadly is in singapore...great my luck.. they arn't being to helpful to get this resolved. Now they want me to mail them my impeller...ya right, gonna take 2 weeks to fix this? no.. so im sending them a more demanding email now..guess will see..

One of the big reasons i try to stay away from pictures is im not to thrilled about the look of my tank right now... mainly because i have 100 or so aiptasia...and well it takes away from the look. I've tried joes juice and aiptasia x and mine just laugh at it like its steroids. Got my hands on an aiptasia zapper, didn't seem to work well or i wasn't using it correctly either way didn't help....haven't tried peppermint shrimp in awhile mainly because they're hit or miss.

looks like aquacave is gonna send me a replacement impeller. i like that idea a bit better. i dont have to wait a long time, hopefully a new impeller will fix this.
