It's funny you posted this question because I was just thinking about this today. I am trying to convince my wife why we need a 100 gal. or larger tank. ( a very tough sell, she's a stubborn one) , and on my 60 gal tall I had a basic stand pipe with slots cut in it surrounded by Bio-balls, and it was very simple, but I always thought it made too much noise.

im running a durso right now. if u dont try and max out the volume of flow through them they can be quiet. its when u max them they start gurgling and flushing. u may also want to check into the herbie method.

will the herbie work with a drilled tank?

I run a 1.25" Durso in a 1" drain. I hear next to NO noise. My skimmer in the stand is much louder than my drain.
If I could, I would run a beananimal overflow. I just love them and they allow for SO much flow with no noise.

Those are durso standpipes in a bean animal overflow system. Different animals ;)
I run a "space-saving" durso and love it... will run them on all my tanks in the future. I'll try to get a pic here at lunch to show you how they're made.
