Just a thought, but that looks like a pro-biotic tank....with clarity and color that comes very close to sunnyx's tank.....
Looking forward to more info, and more pics!!

I would consider myself blessed if I can reach his colors lol...I am trying.
I visited Sunny in Feb 2009 and after seeing his tank, I changed my rock work similar to his as I really liked it. My ATL Christmass mirabilis is from him and it has started to table nicely.
I will try to take some pics soon.

I have been having a battle with some kind of algae. I cannot put my finger down on what it is, I need your help. Its suffocating my zoas one after the other.
It starts off as a very very thin carpet, with turkey baster I can blow it off, but slowly it covers the zoa and the zoas stop opening. It almost looks like its suffocating the zoas.
Below are some pictures, I hope you guys can help me out of it.

Manoj,
Your tank is looking awesome...well on its way to be a true showpiece! The algae may be green cyano or (even worse) dinoflagellates. Usually dino's are a slimy light brown and the bubbles are connected by strings, but it still could be dino's. I know slime algae, cyano, is usually deep red or black/green, but I have read that it can be green as well. I have used red slime remover in my tank successfully, but it will make your skimmer go nuts for a few days. I have used it after I did a water change and sucked out as much of it as possible first. Added the red slime remover and turned off the skimmer. After 2-3 days I did another water change and turned the skimmer back on.
If it is dino's, the lights off technique works, but stresses the corals. Turn your lights off for 3 days..make sure there is no sunlight or ambient light from the room that gets in. cover the glass if needed. After 3 days, start with the actinics for a few hours the first day and SLOWLY add more lighting hours until you are back up to your normal schedule. I did this in the past, it worked, but I turned lights on too quickly and bleached a few sps. good luck!
BTW...what are these called?

Hey Manoj, I can't find the article right now but I think it may be dinos too. Once I find the article, if I remember elevated pH for a few days with take care of it, however very risky as you know.

pretty sure its cyano. Having a little bout of it myself. Chemiclean works wonders but follow the directions. Or/and figure out the food source ie your expanded feedings. Also could try some purigen thats what I am going to do this week.

sorry about your algae. can you put your zoas up off the sand in a rack for awhile? seems like it would help but i dont know.

that sucks, lol about it covering the rack too. there have been times that i have to scrub frags with a toothbrush every few days.
purigen is a little bag of resins. about 17$ and you put it in a hob or sump and it treats 100gal. it is also rechargable. when it turnes brown you clean it in bleach and use a chlorine remover after and put it back. i just bought some myself about a week ago so i dont know the results yet.

Just stick with the MB7 for now. The vodka is just nutrient, which you are trying to diminish. just so people know..red slime remover is a simple antibiotic. The same stuff you get from your family doctor...it is erythromycin. It will kill the cyanobacteria, but does not affect the beneficial bacteria in the tank. It just makes skimmers go crazy...so, people should not be afraid to use it in sps tanks or other coral tanks. let me know when you are going to frag the chronos paly!!!!!

I've used Chemiclean Red Slim Algae remover and it worked wonderful-no I'll effects on my tank at all-I also wouldn't be caught dead without a bag of Purigen in my tank-I'm positive this lead to my winning battle over the dreaded HA issues I was having-my tank is now HA free!

Wow, those are all great ones!! I just got some magicians and I hope they settle in. I just had a bad alk swing in my tank about 2 weeks ago and my tank is still recovering...so I'm waiting a bit to add anything. I bought the magicians right before the semi "crash" and so far they are doing alright. I'll be in touch..we need to do some trading:)

Today morning I started my dark cycle, I hope the bacteria dosing in combination with the dark cycle should help reduce the nutrients to kill the algae.
Usually I do a 24/48 hr this time I plan on doing 72 hrs. And if this does not do the trick then I will go for chemiclean.
Also plan on changing bulbs. Not because they are old but I have some kind of suspicion that aquascience 22k is not helping the situation. I will move back to ATI Blue+
Manoj's Reef
07-22-2010, 01:36 PM
The dark cycle finished this afternoon. The situation has improved but still I see the green layer, I am hoping that it will get better as I am dosing mb7.
Not sure if you guys knew, but due to a bad elos kit , my sps started showing alk burn and then STN. The STN is propagating/ed to all of my sps and now about 75% of my sps are gone over a 3week period. I am hoping the three colonies that are left out will not be affected. But I am not sure , I am mulling over the fact that I might be better off trading it for softies.
Let me know if any one would be interested.

Manoj sorry to hear you continue to have issues after the alk. When I was over I thought for sure you were on the rebound and on the road back to "future TOTM" status. I hope know one takes you up on your trade offer and things get better for you and your awesome tank. Good luck my friend.

Thanks for the kind words Rob. I was chatting with Jim C early this year when he had an episode of STN and he was facing similar situation. One colony after the other was STNing.
Unfortunately dips dont work either.
But I will be back  to get TOTM lol...Infact this probably gives me an opportunity to reconfigure my tank.

Manoj,
Hang in there. You are not alone!! I just had a bad alk swing in my tank due to a bad probe on my Ca reactor. By the time I figured it out my alk was like 14. Lost my huge colony of hawkins blue echinata, yellow tenius, a bunch of nice palys, half my colony of purple monster and my all time favorite wild colony of purple grafted candelight (coolest sps I have ever seen!). I have a few big colonies that now have the bottom half dead. Looks great, let me tell ya. I have things stable again, but most corals that made it are brown. It gives me a reason to chop up some big colonies and make some real estate. Just get params back in line and start over.

i am not sure about coralrx stopping stn but it is a good product. not sure what all is in it but it smells like maybe a little menthol and tea tree oil.
sorry to hear about your new probs. always something lol. i need to siphon up a bunch of algae today and clean plugs again. my tank looks a little wild though that isnt always a bad thing (for critters)
my birdsnest has some bare spots too but doesnt appear to be spreading.

Looks like I am seeing the first effect of mb7 dosing. I did a 15g water change and cleaned the tank yesterday. Usually the green carpet algae returns overnight but this morning the sand is still clean and I am attributing this to the bacteria dosing.

Dooh! Mine never opened or did anything. After about 4 days I dropped it down thinking it was getting too much light. Got nothing. Turned greenish brown, moved it up and nothing. Oh well, LMK when you have more.
As for the dosing schedule, Prodibio is dosed bi weekly after water changes. There is a bacterial source and a carbon source, just like MB7 and vodka.

Rob, I will let you know when I frag it again.
Soulds like Prodibio may be cost effective as you have to dose it only twice a week. What is the carbon source?
Have you heard of using raw rice as a carbon source? there is a lot of discussion going on on RC.

So how are things going with the MB7? Curious to hear the results and methods for dosing! I just picked up my first bottle and like anything that I add to the tank it is making me nervous.

So far everything looks good.
My nitrates have still not gone down yet and my phosphates are at about 0.14, I want to bring the phos down to 0.01/0.02 before I start dosing vodka.
The zoas look a tad pale but will recover.
The sand is very clean and the rocks are also clean. I dont see algae on frag plugs. SoI would say that things are on the positive.
I plan on starting my sps again Oct/nov.

You should add a couple of those on the feeding frenzy contest.
I also ordered mb7, we will see how it goes. My phosphate doesnt read anything and nitrates are 10 on an API but i still have an algea prob. Hope to clear it up. I got tired of scrubbing certain frag plugs, so i put them in a dark tank for a day or 2 or 3 if it needs it.

I Dosed bacteria and combined it with 48 hr dark cycle to get rid of algae.

Thanks Chris,
All my LPS are on the sand bed. I try to provide shade in some cases and low flow. I will take some pics later this weekend.
I lost all my SPS during the alk episode. A friend of mine is holding three colonies for me as the STN was poping from one colony to the other.

Things are on the reversal now.
If you guys remember , I do 2 part dosing and when all sps went down hill my dosing dropping from 140 ml per day to 0 ml per day.
Also there was a time where for 2 weeks I only dosed just 10 ml.
But now things are improving, currently I am doing 80 ml per day. So I guess I can turn my dosing pumps on again. May be I can start my sps collection again. This time I might go with a different approach though.

I always wanted a nice large decent colored yuma. I finally found one and its relaxing in my tank now.
This is large wild caught yuma. I dont have much info on wild caught yumas, so let me know what are the things I should to do make sure it stays happy and healthy.
Pics will come...just to give you a teaser its 4 inch in diameter and still not 100% open.

Hi Chris, The RBTA so far has been well behaved lol , so far its not bothering the rics. Its good to plan ahead. But RBTAs are funny, the will finally decide where they are happy.
I clip off the peg and use aquamend to attach them to the rocks. I shut my skimmer when I use aquamend it drives the skimmer crazy.

I had a huge green bta and it split but was very good. I didnt give him much choice, lol its rock was on an island raised up. It could have just let go though I guess. The second one of those picked a different spot every day for a week. I just got a rbta and put it on the same rock. It was a gamble. They have touched tenacles but stay on opposite sides of the rock so far.

Thanks Chris. ( Thats a gift from Bob Beaker to me) , BTW how come you did not like the first two and last pic , I paid 100+ dollars per polyp for that one and it also has lineage :stupidme:, damn you:smash: , I hate this hobby already:tear:
Just kidding man!! , thanks for the kind words. I love the new nem, it was in the acclimation box for the first couple of days and now I released it into the tank, thats when I took the pic.

Awesome idea with the tree think a acan one would be really nice aswell. You've got the nicest acan collection I've seen. What the secret to growin em n finding such bright colorfull corals. Have good growth with zoas/palys,sps,hammers frogspawn n blasto wellsi but acans n favias not so much. Even chalices grow well for me. Wish I could get more from acans n favias though. Thanks for the insperation and all the pics of your beautifull collection. May have to barrow your tree idea if ya don't mind lol. Have a great day my friend.

Thanks, Steve. I need a better camera:( , my sps are slowly starting to color up. My nitrates from my nitrate reactor are 0 and the nitrates in the tank dropped from 15ppm to 9 ppm, my hope is that I should be able to maintain the nitrates at 0 or near zero. With this my hope is that my cyno will go away:( , its been a pain in my you know what:)

Thanks so much for the awesome comment Jeff, you are right about the reactor, it brought the nitrate down to zero:highfive3:..Thanks for the very nice frags also for the media. Hey I lost the hawkins echinata, was wondering if you had more frags . Also looking for more lokani , granulosa and deep water types. Let me know if you have any?

Update:
As you know I have been using the sulphur nitrate reactor for few weeks now. The nitrates have been down to zero. And my phospban is keeping my po4 at 0.04-0.06 , In the last week or so I have noticed that two of my nice acans took a serious beating.
I figured out that the water had no nutrients and the acans did not like it. Well but the time I figured this out I lost half colony of my SHLOK skittles and one adult polyp of the indian rainbow.
Now I have increased my feeding regimen.
Before I use to feed pellets once in two days and now I feed rods food and mysis every day.
Expensive lesson:duh:

Is this the same red/green BTA that you had at MMC? Typically I see the name "starburst" referring to an orange/yellow/green BTA, but maybe I'm not see the anemone completely in the pic. Either way, very nice!

It was nice meeting you Erica, the one at MMC is the one below. The one above is orange, yellow and green but when I take a pic with flash all I get is red and green. My camera is not the greatest:thumbs_down:
