View Full Version : XL Reef Aquarium(180g+) Post Storm Rebuild
I am going to focus on the positive of this. The watermelon Chalice is doing well and one Picasso clown lived through the nightmare.
Things that will be different:
1. Tank backed up on a standby generator
2. High power cost pumps going away
3. Keeping Red Dragon as circ pump but will feed a small sea grass refugium too
4. Two VOrtech MP40's for wave action on Bat back ups
5. Three Tunze gen II will stay
6. MH totally replaced with CREE LED systems
7. Finishing lighting control panel w/ osram 10V signal Amplifier
8. Denitrator is back on line now and will remain on line
9. Continue dosing two part, mg, K+ but using bioptim for bacterial replacement
Livestock
1. More LPS corals included this time
2. smaller fish such as wrasses and anthias
3. more inverts like shrimp
The aquascaping is getting a new look too.

I have one more of Novus two that I want to do to buff out a few mroe scratches and I am hanging the second light rail either tonight or tommorow. My shelf rock will arrive Friday and I got my 3/4 inch nylon rod and hex nuts today along with the Vortech and BB that would have been nice to have last week. Sand should arrive on Monday. I am actually plugging along. I miss hte tank a lot already.

Mike Im so sorry that you had to go through all this, it is so hard to believe that an entire system could be wiped out so quickly.

So sorry to hear this is how you have to start over! Following along.....
If I get everything done I will have water in this by next weekend. I still have the 30 runing and the sump feeds that so there are critters and bacteria to quick seed the main tank once I remove the bypass.
Just finished.........I am going to drill ou some places and place nylon rods for future acropora on some vertical planes tommorow. wanted to leave some open space on the sand bed for clams and things. Since all the flow will be comng from the end and far corner there should not be an issue with blowing sand at the front of the tank from flow back to front.

consider it done. it has just started to take off, and i have a few others for ya too.
Filling has recommenced!!!!! Bulkheads are in and sealed :) Heaters are on and I anticipate transfer from 30 gallon to 270 this evening. Then 30 gallon goes down for cleaning and reinstallation as sea grass refugium.:smash:

Very cool! Movin right along!!
I like what I see so far.
Thanks man.
Today is transfer day. I will be calling inland aquatics to get the refugim supplies and turtle grasses.
Things are going well so far. I bought a ocellaris last night and a powder blue. They are both doing well this morning. So there are three fish in there and a handfull of corals that survived. Turtle grass refugium should be online first half of next week. I am also adding in one of the acrylic frag tanks I have sitting here for qurantine for corals. Will be able to disconnect from system while observing corals and for cleanikng once they are cleared.

Good to see you get right back in Mike. I was thinking about your story last weekend when I was trying to keep my tanks alive and trying to come up with positive things about what could happen and the only thing I could come up with was that you'll have the fun of building a new reef. Not much in the light of your loss but something to think about anyway, and a reason to not only appreciate but to take full advantage of the new journey, so enjoy the heck out of it. Oh yeah, and keep sharing it with us and don't forget the pics. ;)

Looking super sweet Mike. Love your fish choices so far! If your looking for another Scotts's theres an LFS up here that has the best one I have ever ever seen. Had it for over a month two, deserves a good home. Do I spy a pink eye favia on the sand bed?
Those are Acans and Dendros on the sand bed along with the Zoa's. I have three female Rhomboids and a male in there now. A pink Margin Male, a Solar wrasse, pair of 6 lines, swalesi basslet, Lobouti male, tricolored fairy, and a whipfin.
new addition ;) and a pic of my acan that survived the crash.

So those are pretty cool looking then?
when I frag some I will let you know. I am going to do the one island as zoaland.
that would be cool. I might fianally get to test out that band saw I bought

Those are going to look much better under your led's than in the pic.
hoping to finish those up completely this weekend. I am going to wire and hang "The Torch" hopefully and then place them all where I want them for colororation.

There used to be a term in Michigan Reefing called, "Marvin Money" Well now Im calling is "Mike Money" dang bro, would have never guessed you lost everything just a few weeks back. Your quick on the rebuild!!!
I gotta come see this think in person, maybe next week.....oh almost forgot about the zoa trade!
Been selling the extra equipment and took on a side gig :) I think it would be nice to have you over. You can give me some zoa pointers.
It has been about 6 weeeks since the dreaded power outage. I just hate to think about that tank and see a bare one. So I have done what I can to re-populate it.
