After running a squid for the past 8 months i can no longer recommend them.Mine has failed. They are a great idea, but unless you run pre-filters on your return pumps, they inevitably clog up and fail. Not to mention the reduced flow from restriction.Mine failed last week so i replaced it with a T and used over-sized(1" plumbing) and reduced it to 3/4" at the pump and at the dual PVC elbow returns. The amount of flow i gained since the new plumbing has been incredible.By using over-sized plumbing you reduce the friction in the plumbing.Ever blow thru a coffee-stirrer then a 7-11 straw.same principle.
My overflow couldn't handle it so I had to modify it and add another U-tube.I would say I've gained over 200 GPH since the removal of the squid.

Sorry bout the luck... as for mine, I love it! Gotta admit, though, when I am able to afford it, I'll be removing the SQWD and replacing with a Sea Swirl!!!

Repto,
I think I read some where that you were buying one of these
http://www.instrumentpro.com/page/MUO/PROD/409-2-4/CHASF4005to try for a wave maker?
How is it working? I have been thinking about SQWD but I am kind of on the fence. Both have pros and cons.

Ah there's that link I have been looking for, thanks! I have been leaning away from the sqwd's just because of the extra restriction they cause, meaning a larger and larger return pumps. But that litte $30 controller is what I want for the 180g to control 4 MJ1200's for waves, that oughta help keep things stirred up.

Let me know if you have problems in the future.
I like the SCWD for its simplicity and have heard rave reviews. At this point I leaning towards the electronic thing though. I am little afraid to ripe in to my return line and mess with all of my plumbing. Everything is work well (knock on wood) at this point. I am also afraid that my MAG 7 won't have enough power to surge well. Plus you can't turn the SCWD off or vary it. I think I just convinced myself. :)

I've heard that there's supposed to be a larger SQUID out soon.I like mine as well, cant beat the alternating flow every 8-12 sec. but the loss of flow with it has convinced me its not the greatest.
