View Full Version : Water Treatment Need opinions- for External Skimmers

I am going to buy a new skimmer for my newest reef tank. It needs to be a external skimmer for my sump. Any good recommendations? Any to stay away from? 54 gal corner reef limits the area under the tank. $200 is the most I would probably spend. A Quiet skimmers is very important.

Reef Octopus DNW150 would be a great one for you.

What ever you do lean really far away from the Red Sea Prizm skimmers. Had one once, complete poopola. Skimmer needs to be adjusted constantly. Had a BakPak skimmer once too and hated it. Great for aeration, not so great for actual skimming. I owned a Coralife SS and that surprisingly worked very well and easy to adjust...........damn just realized I've owned a lot of different skimmers! Those are just a few, oops one more HOB Seaclone. Was my very first actually liked it from what I remember, but didn't know any better!!

I have never been a advocate of the protein skimmer, but I am going to use 1 on this tank. I think a good one will see results. I have a Pro Clear 75 running in my new tank, and lots of fine bubbles, but not 1 drip of Skimate in the cup.

Anything else in there yet? May be too clean to pull waste.

No there is not any fish in the new tank yet. Still doing the cycling. I had the Pro Clear running on the new tank for 1 week and it did nothing. Not much of a Bio-Load. I will probably buy a new skimmer in the next few weeks and get it ready. I am kind of leaning to the different Octopus skimmers, or the Coral life Super Skimmer. Undecided........
