:::NOW 25g:::

Ok, so I'm starting my tide pool tank. It will be a predator tank with anglers. I got just a simple cheap kit with a tank, filter, light, and hood. The lights are CF for now but I'm 90% sure I'll switch to T-5 since I have an old retro fit kit laying around from my biocube before I went to LEDs. Also will be adding a nano skimmer eventually and a heater hopefully by friday.

I really set this tank up solely because of an angler I fell in love with. I didn't do too much planning so I'm not exactly sure what else will go in it. It is one of those things that I'll figure it out as I go. The theme is supposed to be tide pool like so maybe some sponges or seaweed but NO MACRO!

10g Glass Breeder
Aqueon Filter (for a 10g, came in the kit)
CF T-12(?) Light (came in the kit)

~8.75lbs of Cured LR
~3lbs of Dry Sand
Seeded with some Live Sand from a ~6 year old reef tank.

Livestock:
Hopefully on Friday (if params are good) a Wartskin Angler (A. pictus)
Some Hermits
A Few Tiger Trochus Snails

Some bad pics from my iPhone:

The star of the tank for now:

And here's Waldo as he has been named by the guys at the shop. He eats frozen krill and squid.
http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/SXM50/DSC_0292.jpg

So, what do you think of it so far? It's a beginning, I think.

First let me say our iPhones take pretty good pics :)) and these prove it!
Sweet crab what kind is it? I'm looking forward to watching this tank grow.

Thanks guys. Yeah I guess the pics aren't too bad, it's my iPhone 4 so...

And the crab is a halloween hermit (Ciliopagurus strigatus).

i've always wanted an angler. i decided to go with a mantis instead because i could house it in a 5.5g rather than a 10g, the 5.5g fit perfect on my desk top under my hutch.

good stuff, thought Anglers were poisonous? What happened to the fish breeding?

Bongo Shrimp
07-14-2010, 03:34 PM
I thought they were too but found out otherwise. When I hold him sometimes he puffs up a little. And as for breeding I'm working on my cards if they would spawn again, and maybe mandarins (spotted). Oh and also seahorses.

Bongo Shrimp

Ok, got the T5s on there. I took them from my old biocube hood before I had the LEDs on the reef. They are fine for all LPS and some SPS. They are 20" Nova Extreme T5s and I have four, two daylight and two actinic.

Well, I went to the LFS today to see Waldo but he has velvet now. We're going to dip him this week to see if he gets better but IDK. :( :tear:

Ok, I just decided to move all my zoas out of my reef and into the 10g. They just never did well in my reef so I think I can save/grow/propagate them better and more easily in the smaller safer environment.

So now the zoas I have in there are:
Purple Hornets
Rastas
Nightmares
Darth Mauls
Emeralds on Fire
Paradise Zoas
Tubbs Blues
LA Lakers
Some Green Sparkly Zoas (have a name but I forgot it)
Some Palys that have a name but I haven't looked it up yet. (given to me as a freebie)

I also have two yumas and some ultra rare Blue Green Purple and Orange SYMPODIUM.

Yeah so Waldo kicked the bucket a few days ago.

Somehow I was able to pull some strings to get this killer.

Meet Rouge-

I need to get him eating frozen but it is rumored that at the wholesaler he ate live ghost shrimp.

And not new but...

Rainbow Yuma:

I'm so sorry about Waldo. Such a beautiful fish. What do you think caused his demise? He was wild caught right?

Bongo Shrimp
08-07-2010, 10:14 AM
I'll get a better pic later with my real camera. Yes Waldo was wild caught and I think it was a combination of the weird velvet like disease coupled with not eating. He was FW dipped a few times but it didn't seem to help.

Bongo Shrimp
01-06-2011, 09:22 PM
Ugh, everyone always thinks I feed them to him frozen...

I soak it just enough so it doesn't fall apart when I grab it with the tweezers. It is sometimes only slightly cool. I am very careful about this.

Sir Patrick
01-06-2011, 09:29 PM
I figured you would thaw it out. His reaction after words was just like a human brainfreeze though- you have to admit! :tongue_out:

Bongo Shrimp
01-06-2011, 09:32 PM
It's more like choking or vomiting. I mean, if you've ever tried feeding a frogfish different things, you will have seen them "evacuate" certain food items. That movement is how they do it. When Rogue does it, he is just getting little particles out of his mouth.

rosebud161616
01-07-2011, 06:35 AM
These guys are so cool. I have always been very interested, but the whole eating live foods part put me off. What was your secret to getting him to frozen?

Bongo Shrimp
01-07-2011, 07:00 AM
When I first got him I was feeding him live mollies. I always tried to get yellow ones because they looked like frozen krill. Then I would get smaller mollies and hold a krill in the tweezers with the Mollie so he would eat both at the same time. Then I started just trying the krill by itself. At first I don't think he liked the krill but I would only give him mollies once a week. He would be getting hungry enough to just take the krill. Then I just decided to try the formula one cube and I don't know if it is just luck or what but he started eating those too. Now he loves the formula one cubes and the krill. He also associates a person looking at or standing near the tank with food because when ever anyone goes near it he flicks his little lure asking for food.

rosebud161616
01-07-2011, 07:01 AM
Where you using the tweezers to feed the live mollies or where they free swimming?

Bongo Shrimp
01-07-2011, 07:15 AM
I used tweezers. It is much easier to tell if he eats something when it is directly given to him. Plus they were fw mollies so they would just die in the sw eventually.

rosebud161616
01-07-2011, 11:44 AM
I hope you don't mind my million questions! So the mollies were live when you use the tweezers right? I just imagine trying to get a live molly in tweezers and that seems like a huge challenge in itself.

Also... an LFS near us throws freshwater mollies in saltwater and then after a month sells them as saltwater mollies for like a $1/ea. Most make the transition, so they probably would have survived after all! :)

Bongo Shrimp
01-07-2011, 02:22 PM
Yes getting the live mollies into the tweezers is not easy. They are very slippery. You cant be queasy about it. Sometimes you really have to grip them tightly. I was feeding him mollies from my LFS that were thin or deformed or dying. They gave me a discount on them since I was buying all the non desirable ones.

Truthfully, if you think about it, when your trying to teach them to feed from tweezers anyways, might as well start out that way. It makes them learn that the tweezers hold food.

I haven't updated this thread in forever. Long story short the pair of flamboyants I was getting died before they could be shipped. Then I found some captive bred flamboyants for $1000 each which was crazy and then the season was over for when they would be coming in. Now the tank is an anemone tank with a tidepool feel. It has more open sand area than rock. I'll get a FTS soon but it's hard cause my light creates a spotlight effect. I'll figure a way to get a good shot.

Here's some pics:

And today I got this little gem who is eating spectrum pellets but also enjoys my bird of paradise frags and sympodium I gave him.
