Default To change or not to change.....

Ok I am considering switching from RC to Tropic Marin salt.... basically its about the same cost for me (tm is like .02/g more maybe lol) but I am wanting to know if its really any better/ should I make the change

Anyone have any experience with TM especially with switching from RC??

Little bit about my system... 180g is going to be mostly FO I think, possibly some sticks, ultra cheap fillers, a 30g cube with a full mixed reef, and a 100g fuge w/ 20 or 70g sump.

Thanks for the help guys/ gals

I haven't tried TM yet so I am following along with great interest. Have you tested any of the params for TM to compare the differences?

Not sure how much I can help but here's my .024 cents. I've never used RC but I have been using TM for 3-4 years and like it. My understanding is that TM has low Mg compared to some other mixes... but I'm already dosing Mg as part of the DIY 2 part. I have never had issues with low Mg.

Interesting. I also dose mag but I don't know if I want to have to adjust all my routines in order to change salt. Still following.

The trustworthy folks at Preuss informed me about lower Mg. They said that the lower Mg helps the cloudiness dissipate more quickly when mixing. I'm not sure how much lower it is. I just follow the Randy-Holmes guidelines and have had no issues.

Yeah I have heard that TM has lower MG, and that is somewhat of a concern because right now I do not dose anything, and kind of want to stay that way atleast until things get going more and Id have to dose no matter what Im using Roughly how much do u dose and how often using TM

I switched from tm to rc about 6 months back. Used tm for years. Always struggled with low mg. It was costing me a fortune to maintain mg with bulk reef supply stuff in a 220 gallon tank. Rc is way better for mag. rc doesn't clear up as quick I agree with that. But its a small price to pay for the much higher mg.

Yeah thats what I am kinda worried about with my system.... I will have 210 of display, and another 80-100 or so in sump/fuge at their levels

What are the pros and cons of the two salts? Why are you considering the change? The reason I ask is if the price is the same and you get somewhat the same results, if it aint broke don't fix it.

Hello mate, I would first caution you to heavily consider what you are about to do.

1. No two salts are a like. Some are similar, but each slightly different then the other. Your corals have adapted to the RC and I'm sure you're making adjustments parameters wise after your WC.

2. What is the percentage of corals in your tank? Are they expensive and hard to replace?

3. If cost is not an issue, I wouldn't switch salt. RC is the only salt I use and I consider it the best and a search on the net will back this up. Rich in calcium and dissolves supper quick. My parameters seldom need adjusting after a WC.

4. There are lots of horror stories of switching salts. Tanks have crashed, corals have died and some simply don't respond well as the switch was done incorrectly. A salt change must be done gradually over several WC via a series of small WC and not all at once.

5. Sending a link via PM that you should read first. I think it will be very convincing

Good luck my friend.
