I am currently setting up my new tank and put some new live rock in it. The big piece is 56 lbs. and was kept in an unlit tank at the LFS. After a week of increasing the lights by 1hour a day some brown diatoms started growing which I expected. Yesterday I came home and the big rock was covered in 1" to 2" brown hair algae, the smaller 20-25 lb pieces just had some diatoms on them. Does any one know if the algae will go away.
Time for a clean up crew... with some time and patience, I think you'll find that the algae will subside. Have you tested your water quality and what are your lighting arrangements(time, type, wattage, etc)?
There's nowhere else I'ld rather be... unless, of course, you're buying
I have 3 2 ft. lights running from front to back over each 1/3 of the tank (6') Each light has 4 t-5 ho's and a 250 watt MH. I started turning on the t5s for an hour a day and bumped it up an hour a day until it was about 7 hours. Then I started the halides an hour a day and it seemed the algae went crazy when they were on for about 5 hrs. Two days later only the big rock has hair algae the smaller ones just some diatoms which is normal. Could it be something in the big rock ?
