So I am starting up a 75gal mixed reef tank and I am not sure what direction to go on the substrate. I have been thinking sand but have concerns about the never ending blowing of it. I have also considered the starboard but don't like the fact that I can't have burrowing critters. so I am kinda back to the old standby crushed coral. Just wondered others opinion.
Pink aragonite comes in several sizes NO crushed coral! The sand may blow around at first but after it gets weighed down with age it'll settle. However it does get tossed quit a bit with burrowing gobys.
I agree don't go with crushed coral, it will become a nitrate factory eventually. Another tip when making your choice is don't bother with ' live sand' it is not needed and a extra cost to an expensive hobby

Its personal opinion. What looks good to you?
Personally I have 330 lbs of Southdown aragonite sugar sand in a 100G at 5-6" deep.
It has been in the tank 9 years, never been vacuumed or cleaned, does not shift or move unless something digs it up and is as white as the day I installed it.
Others like a shallow decorative sand bed which also looks nice. Its really up to you as to what grain size and how much but I do know the finer grains support more colonizing bacteria and snails and sanbed critters thrive in it.
