Not too bad as long as they aren't over 5 or so inches... they are bristle worms. BTW, avoid touching them with your bare fingers. Those "tiny white legs" are more like fine hairs that when touched, imbed themselves into your skin and are very painful. They are also known as fire worms.
There's nowhere else I'ld rather be... unless, of course, you're buying
If you get stung, submerge the affected area in white vinegar (from the super market) for 5 minutes. The needles will dissolve and you'll have no pain.
Oh sure, now you tell us melev LOL I picked up a coral and "found" a bristle worm. That sucker burned for hours and I still felt twinges 2 days later! (The bristle worm found it's way into our garbage disposer for it's little prank!)
The difference between stupidity and genius is that stupidity has no limits!
I've done the same - picked up a coral or small rock to move it and found my finger nestled up against one of those buggers. I guess I've been fortunate; they've never bothered me too badly, just a mild burning sensation for 10 -15 minutes. I will keep the vinegar soak in mind, though... good trick to know!
It is either that, or a feeble attempt with duct tape and tweezers. Vinegar is so much easier.
Heck, if you want to live life on the edge, try muriatic acid since it is 10x stronger. It should melt the needles right off the flesh, mere seconds before your flesh begins to melt off your bones. :D
Sounds fun! J/K! I'm not much of a living-life-on-the-edge kinda gal... I think vinegar sounds just peachy!
LOL!
All things can be cured by salt water, whether by sweat, tears or going to sea.
