Depends on how much you are into maintainence.... crushed coral and the like creates pockets for wastes to accumilate and have manually be removed before they turn into mini 'nitrate factories', a sandbed on the other hand is pretty much maintenance free as beneficial critters will continually keep it stirred up and consume excess nutrients.

IMO sandbeds are the only way to go.

I agree....from someone who has had both I will never do crushed coral again. Constant vacuuming is required to keep it clean

Thanks Guys. Now whats the deal with sand do I need to go with multiple layers of different size or should 4" of a calcium base sand be fine. I will also try to find a cup or two of live sand to add

If you are going to use a deep sandbed (4" or more) then then finer sand is recommended, for a shallow the medium sized granules are preffered 1-1.5mm type, both aragonite based sand will serve you best. There are a variety of ways the sand will help besides nutrient control, it helps buffer things like alkalinity, pH, and to some degree calcium.

Not really, don't be surprised when you have sand on the bottom and CC on the top. Vibrations will compact the sand and litterly force the CC to the surface. Like growing rocks in a garden.

I would like to go with white sand but I've heard alot of it could be bleached. What do I need to watch out for and where can I find some.
