MY FRIEND HAS A 55 GAL TANK AND HE HAS A MASSIVE GREEN HAIR ALGAE
PROBLEM. THIS IS MASSIVE, HIS LIVE ROCK IS OVERWHELMED WITH THIS STUFF
AND SO THE GROUND. WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM? HE DOES REGULAR H20
CHANGES AND " KEEPS UP" AS HE SAYS, HE HAS TAKEN THE FOAM AND CARBON
OUT OF HIS AQUA CLEAR FILTERS AND REPLACED IT WITH LIVE ROCK, AND KEEPS
LIGHT ON FOR 12 HRS. I THINK THIS IS THE MAIN PROBLEM. YOU GUYS HAVE
ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS? I TOLD HIM TO CUT THE LIGHT TO 8 HRS OR LESS AND
TO ADD CARBON BACK TO HIS FILTERS, AND DO A H20 CHANGE SCRUBBING THE
ALGAE AND SUCKING IT OUT. PLEASE HELP!!!
#1 if no coral, no light(if there is, your recommendation is good so long as the lighting is of proper spectrum and not too old). Is this friend using tap, well, or RO/DI water? How often is this friend feeding??? How about a clean up crew... snails, etc???
There's nowhere else I'ld rather be... unless, of course, you're buying
#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#In order to get algae under control you have to understandwhat fuels it. Your friend probably has very high phosphates and nitrates, and they also feed on silicates to a much lesser extent. Phosphates and nitrates usually come from food. Flake food and pellets are loaded with phosphatesand the natural breakdown of waste builds the nitrates. What kind of substrate and filtration is he using?I would recommend a 10% water change daily for a week and then if he doesn't have anything that requires light, put the tank in total darkness for about 10 days. You can also pick up a phosphate remover at Petsmart for about $10 for three bags. The manufacturer says they last three months each, but one month is probably more realistic. Good luck. #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#KG #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#
