    BeakerBob,

What is the biggest or best advancement in the saltwater (hobby) that has been made over the last thirty years. Ie... filtration , lighting , salt mixes etc.

I think increased reliability of heaters has probably been huge.

Agreed, but then again we would all probably agree that they still aren't where we would like them to be.

I would think it would be biological filtration and the use of live rock.

Agreed on live rock. No more undergravel filters and all that mess!
Detroit's oldest large LED tank! Est'd Jan 2005, went LED June 2009. 6' wide 130g reef, Sunbrite T10 LED tubes (3xGen 3 and 1xGen 1), mostly SPS, but chalices, other LPS, and a few softies too.

    Pete,
Good question!! Here are my 2 cents worth for the biggest advancements in saltwater hobby:

    1. Live Rock for biological filtration.
    2. Efficient skimmers
    3. Lighting
    4. Improved salt mixes
    5. Better understanding of supplements (calcium, alkalinity, pH, etc.), propagation and compatibilities.

I'm going to hitch onto what Jamie said. Even though the 'net is only +- 12 years old. Without it, a lot of us would not hear about all the new technologies that come about in this hobby if it weren't for forums/articles/etc.

Live Rock is another good one, however. Probably LR, then forums.
