Magician palys have been one of my favorite since I got into the hobby and I've always had some in my reef. Though called, "
Paly" because of its size, it's actually a type of zoanthid. The red in the polyp ranges from a rich cabernet, to cherry red, to slightly on the red-orange side. The blue sparkles shimmer like stars under actinics or royal blue LED's and usually emanate from the center. Though I've seen the sparkle range from just a tiny bit in the middle, to covering the whole polyp almost to the point of appearing on the skirts. The skirts, when well colored will take on an alternating pattern of cherry red/cabernet red.
Magicians are pretty easy to keep. Mine have survived a couple of minor tank crashes and I've seen a frag practically come back from the dead after being stuck in the back of my tank under a rock for several months. They do well with a little flow. Though, I'd keep them out of a constantly directed blast from a powerhead. The grow fairly well and benefit from supplemental feeding. As with any zoanthid, they require supplemental feeding in fishless tanks in order to thrive.
