    Additional Information & Description

I have had several duncans in the past and always fed them to get the ball growth form. This specimen I have purposely not fed in hopes that it will take a more branching form. While it is growing very slowly without feeding it does seem to be branching.

    Great photo Chuck!

I didn't realize that feeding caused that ball growth form. I like the branching more myself.

Thanks Jim, I'm not convinced that the amount of light doesn't have something to do with it as well. I also have this in lower light. While it is growing the way I want it too, the growth is painfully slow.

Are you sure they aren't just different species, that grow ball form vs branching. Mine is ball form and while it eats plenty of pellets and flakes by default, I have never spot fed. In about 3yrs it's gone from 1 head to about 50(guestimate) and is a little bigger than a softball.

It's all speculation, I am pretty sure they were all the same species but this particular coral gets very little food as it is in a tank without fish.

I always figured it was a flow thing myself. I would be curious to know for sure.

Hmm, perhaps subspecies would have been a better use of terminology. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts are all Brassica Oleracea, though with very different morphology. Similarly all dogs are the same species yet so many different morphologies.
