My experience has been that I can't seem to keep them. They sure look cool though.

I'd start with an acan echinata, not as colorful as the Aussie lords are. But there easier to learn with and good growers, just very very agressive to other coral if placed to close. I'd say the hardest thing to accomplish is keeping the crazy colors (the aussie ones) from turning red.

We have put a lot of the "red" aussie acans in very low light (almost shaded) and they turn into amazing rainbow acans.

yeah i am sort of worried about this because i am putting 3x 3w crees over a tiny 2.5g pico tank that i want to make an acan lord species tank and hopefully they don't get pounded with to much light and lose their rainbow colors.

Are Acans anything like Favias? They seem to be to me.

I would say they are somewhat like a favia. The polyps or heads are seperate though instead of being conected except at the base. I think they are generaly pretty easy to care for. I have been treating mine more like zoas or a soft coral. Dont worry to much about them but change their positioning if they dont look happy. They can eat too but I read that you dont want to really overfeed them or they will have alot of soft tissue and not as much of a base to grow on. Dont know if that is true but I have followed that. I feed like once or 2x's a week whenever I remember and feel like it.

Just as any other LPS, Acans need to be fed. They love to eat, so you need to feed.
