is it possible to predict what way your zoas will grow? if they are on a 45 degree angle will they always grow down? will they climb up towards the light? is there no pattern what so ever?

Waterflow, light, and ease of growth path, are likely the most determining factors.

A medium-strong flow usually pushes growth along in the same direction. Unless the polyps grow up or down enough to escape the main push of the flow.

Depends on the likes of the individual polyp- some will grow towords the light, as others will grow away from it.....flow also.

+1 on the light and flow it pretty much goes for any coral!

I personally have never witnessed a correlation of growth pattern and/or directional growth due to lighting placement or flow pattern. I have seen polyps grow up, over, onto and behind rocks in my reefs where there was very little light and flow at all. Believe it or not, even subtle light and low current is enough to keep them alive. They will of course fare much better with an increase in both.

Before we all upgraded to MH, T5 and LEDs, back in the day we all had VHO, PCs and Maxijet 1200s, and we grew corals like crazy. I don't think it is at all possible to predict directional growth in my opinion.
