Default Lets talk sticks.....

Let's talk reef building corals! I thought we could talk a little bit about colored sticks. I would like to take thread suggestions only in this thread. Then we can start an individual thread to address each topic in the order that it is posted. Whether your a newbie who is interested in SPS corals or a veteran who is obsessed with SPS corals let's cover it all!
I will start with a couple of suggestions
Lighting
Nutrient Export
Chemistry as it Involves SPS Corals

Let the suggestions fly!

This should be interesting if it takes off. I, being somewhat of a newbie, would be interested to hear about placement / lighting requirements for different sps corals. Related to placement, I presume flow must become a consideration, particularly if you are into a mixed reef.

Schminksbro, this and the global warming thread are great ideas for discussion. I hope they take off. I certainly will be interested in following.

Cool idea. I've had my reef for a long time but have only dabbled in "colored sticks". I'd love to learn more about them.
Here are my topic requests:
  • An ID thread that has common and genus/species names with corresponding pictures.
  • A thread all about tabling Acropora spp. I've always like the look of these but know little to nothing about care. Specifically, what species have this growth form.

QUESTION: Am I supposed to start these threads?

Thanks,
Tom

Keeping water in natural sea conditions or as close to is the best i have found. I used to over do everything, and it was a never ending chase. Now that i am more relaxed, It seems to be the best for the corals. I am getting good growth and great color. the valona seems to be getting a foot hold, But i scrap the glass maybe once in 10 or so days so i know its not a nutrient issue.
My rock and sand is going thru a little cycle since i used to keep alk at 12 dkh and mg at 1450ppm. Now that its close to nsw the life i choked out is returning.
Never think that you can control life, Just try to manage it.

when purchasing new sticks, is there a dip that should be done? what kind? what are some things to be looking at when buying a new colony?

Get yourself a good magnifying glass. Not expensive, Just a quality one you can see if theres fw or rb on them.
Also the dip i use is revive. It works good, But as i found out it is not as effective on rb as it is fw.
Keep some interceptor around and use if nec.
A qt tank is a very good idea, I usually keep one running at all times for new corals. Its easier and cheaper to treat the qt than the display.
I don't have one now as the real estate is not there with the work i am doing right now. When i am done up it go's.
I have not brought any sps since the qt was down.

Good idea Mark! However a mille is an acro. Acropora Millepora.
