From the instructions, you simply attach a low flow (80-150gph) power head to the input and the water returns to your sump through the holes drilled in the lid of the bottle.

That still doesn't make sense? So the jug sits in my sump/ref and I run a hose to a powerhead?

Sounds like you've got the idea... attach the pump to the reactor(jug) via tubing and set in your sump. The only thing that needs to be submerged is the pump. I don't recommend using as a hang-on due to the chances of leaking.

So is there any water in the reactor? I guess I am trying to figure out the dynamics of how the carbon/phosphate is put into the system? is it just pulled by the powerhead out of the jug in powder form? I was confused by your statement to set it your sump. I thought that meant the jug, but then you said the only thing that needs to be submerged is the pump. As well does the powerhead go to the main tank or in the refugium, or either?

As well what powerhead would be ideal for this setup? I am stopping at the LFS tonight to pick up a tang to put in my QT and could grab a powerhead as well if they have one that would work in stock.

Carbon/phosphate isn't put into the system. Water flows through carbon and a phosphate removing "gravel" and back into the system. Think of one of those Hang On filters that have a carbon bag in them. Water flows through the carbon on it's way back into the tank. Now open that carbon bag and add some phosban to it and you've got the same principal.

So then would a media bag filled with carbon and phosban do the same thing?

The reason I ask is if you saw my MicroBubbles post I was thinking of converting the chamber where the black sponges are into the "reactor" chamber if I could find a way to get it to work properly.

Or is this something I should do after the refugium instead of before the water enters the refugium.
