Chris depending on what your keep alot of people vary opinion on flow. Im currently with a 55g, set up as a coral reef type tank, running a MAG 9.5 & two power heads, I consider this to little, and plan to upgrade in the future.

A sump I would imagine it depends what you plan to keep in it. If its a refugium style with space for skimmer and such you'll probably need a wide sump maybe at least 20gallons? Its the space that ends up mattering more than the gallons even though more gallons usually means a more stable system.

Good luck feel free to ask more questions.

Default sump

I run a 30 long 36LX12WX17H Under my 55G. I had to modify the rear center brace on stand to do this. I think as big as you can fit is good. There are pics i think in DIY forum.

Like I said Chris depends what you can fit, but yes if you can do it as big as possible I'd do that. Have you thought of getting a pre-drilled tank you can also do one of the DIY overflows. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.

I'm using a 20 on a 55 but wish it was bigger' I had to remove the back middle brace and do a extra brace along the back top to fit a 20 long under it.
