    Awards Tank of the Month

    Default FiReBReTHa's Smokin' Reef

I would like to thank CaptiveReefs for selecting my reef to be Tank of the Month. My current reef was setup in May 2009. The tank is a 120-gallon (4x2x2-foot) custom built rimless from Glasscages. It is 3/4-inch glass and black silicone.

My goal was design the rockwork as an underwater racetrack for my achilles to swim around and have fun. I used Loctite marine epoxy to glue the rocks together.

The magnetic rocks on the sides of the tank are from The Alternative Reef, they made a WORLD of a difference in my tank since it allowed me to place my corals at different heights in the tank and also take advantage of that extra dimension in the tank.

I also used The Alternative Reef "Biguns" for my chalice grow outs and their "Doughnuts" to keep my chalices in place.

    Equipment & Maintenance

I have an ATB 840v2 keeping my bioload in check, It runs very quietly which is essential when your reef tank is in your family room with television.

I run Bulk Reef Supply phosphate remover that I change monthly in a reactor. I dose Bulk Reef Supply two part solution thru my Reefkeeper to keep things under control. I have safety features programmed into the Reefkeeper such as a float switch to shut down the skimmer if the water level in the sump raises too high. Another alarm I placed is to shut down the heater if the tank goes above 80-degrees.

The Lighting is a DIY kit from ReefLEDLights.com, I went with Bill's product because he is an avid reefer and did his homework on which were the best batches of LEDs to use over the reef and I have had great success with his product. I have 120LEDs over my tank, Doing it again I would have done 18" heat sinks rather than one large one.

I have a Eheim 1262 for my return pump that I have diverted to return part of that stream back into the 30g sump. The in tank flow is created by three Vortech MP-40wES on ReefCrest. My goal is to get two additional Vortech MP-40ws on the back wall to really get flow moving in the tank.

Putting together a Tank of the Month article and photos takes a lot of work, and as appreciation for Rick's efforts, he received a $25 gift certificate from Amazon Stingrays. Thanks Rick for sharing your tank with us and thank Amazon Stingrays for your support!
