Thanks for the replies. I did decide that for the time being, my canister filter will work just fine over a sump. The tank being only 40 gallons, and my first attempt at this sort of thing, I want to keep it as simple as possible.
I am located Northwest Illinois, a stones throw from Wisconsin / Iowa... Not much in terms of civilization around here, especially the kind that would be into reef-keeping :)
Well, having the "stretch-hex" is what's getting me down as far as "hood and canopy".. Not much really made for such a tank... at least none I've been able to find.
I am handy enough, my wood working skills is adequate... but the condo life prevents me from having the areas in which to work on such a project....
I did figure out from a local fish store the actual lighting I want to use....
But it would still be neat to get a canopy to put it all in, especially since I don't care to have to hang the light from the ceiling.... (having no mounting options for a hex :( )
I suppose I can try to find a way to get a canopy made......

If you need a sump,i'm getting rid of some of my old reef stuff/equiptment.I have a post in the for sale forum here.As for the suggestion your LFS made for lighting, what was it.
BTW,i tend to not take any advice from a LFS,most of them dont know #$%^ and are just trying to sell you something that they mark up 200% so they can make a profit.
