On my 75 gal I have a seaclone 150 skimmer. It seems to be working great. My parameters are all good Nitrate 0, Amonia 0, pH 8.2, Salinity 36ppt, phosphate 0. My question is do I have a problem? My skimmer produces only @ 1 cup every week or two. The skimmate is a dark soupy mix nasty smelling. I keep reading about all the problems guys are having with salinity because thier skimmer removes so much skimmate. Is mine producing too little. I have heard the term dry skimmate I assumed it meant bubble production with little water loss. Is that so? Is my skimmer under producing?
One thing about this hobby is there is never just one right way of doing something. What I have come to realize is that is all about the results. If your SeaClone is working (which is sounds like it doing a fine job) there is no reason to worry. If you system is healthy with no problems (high nitrates, algae break out) then your OK.
Something to keep in mind, is that it may be working fine now but it might not be able to keep up later on if you increase the bioload (fish, inverts, corals) to your system. The important thing is to make small changes, watch for effects and adjust accordingly. You may not need a bigger skimmer, if you increase the size of rufugium. Both act as bio-load exporters. Just my 2 cents.
