Well something has to regulate it-I mean it just can't pump water in all day right? :/ now I'm wondering if I can use it for an ato??

You can use it for an ATO. You just need something to turn it on and off. You can use something as simple as a float valve spliced into a power extension cord, to something as fancy as the JBJ ATO. I recommend the autotopoff.com ATOs. They're reasonably priced and give you fail safes.

I used autotopoff.com ATOs for first 1.5yrs and they worked well. Just buy an extra float switch incase something fails.
