Found this guy in my frag tank and was wondering if it is predatory or not? I have other snails in the frag tank (turbos and astrea) and don't want them in danger. The snail is about a 1/2" long. Thanks for any info.
Nassarius snail. Great sand sifters and detritus eaters. Harmless.
Hey Jamie, I don't think it's a nassarius snail, cause the shell is more slender and the tube on the nassarius looks alot longer and not striped like this snail. http://www.peteducation.com/article....+2222&aid=3290
I wanna know about this snail too I have a couple of them very tiny ones. Are they safe for your coral?
Heidi I have one in my frag tank and it's never touched a coral.

I believe that is an Ilyanassa obsoleta. Close relative to the nassarius snail and often sold under the name "tonga nassarius." They are partially predatory. Here is an article on them:
It looks like Ilyanassa obsoleta has a growth size of 1" more like the Nassarius distortus. I think the one here, like mine, is more like Nassarius vibex, the smaller .5" Nassarius.

How long have you had it? They aren't born at 1" size...
There are 2 types (possibly more?) of nassarius snail, the Nassarius distortus and nassarius vibex snails. Other than shell color, the most noticable difference is size.
The snail pic'ed above looks to be nassarius to me.
