I have a frag tank ( this being my first saltwater tank). I have some frags that my buddy gave me to get me going. I am feeding with Coral frenzy twice a week. I read other threads that say you can see the corals eating. How do I know if my corals are eating. I know one problem I have that I already know the solution to and thats shutting down the pump so I dont lose my food down into the sump. But I havent had a chance to get a small powerhead to keep things moving while pumps are off. So other then that how do I know if my corals are eating? Any other tips you all could give this newbie would be greatly appreciated. I Know I have a darth maul, a goochster, a gobstopper, and capt. america. There is also an acan not sure what name is, an orange and green lobo, some frogspawn, and a torch coral, and a green favia of some sort. Like I said these where all a given to me from my buddy so I am still learning.
Thanks
Jay

I wish I had a friend that nice, consider yourself a lucky guy. That's a nice starter pack. It's kinda hard to tell if zoas are eating unless they start to close around a large chunk of food(like mysis shrimp). Usually my palys will do that, the acan and the favia will have a visibly open mouth and feeding tentacles emerge to "grab" bits of food out of the water column( if you have the patience you can target feed most, but not all, corals by holding mysis close to the mouth/tentacles untill the coral takes the offered tidbit). I just broadcast feed my tank though. Though from my experience everything happens in slow motion. So just don't expect things to happen fast. Also most lps corals will eat at night, being nocturnal hunters. Though they will and do feed during daytime for tasty foods, like coral frenzy, rods food, & cyclopeze. My usual lineup of food.
Though only being in the hobby for a few years I'm by no means an expert, and still consider myself a novice. I'm sure some of the experts will chime in.

Thanks for the info, its greatly appreciated, do you turn your pump off when you feed? how many times a week do you feed? and do you rotate the food selection?
I feed every other day, I usually mix the coral frenzy and cyclopeze together. Then do rods food alone. And occasionally I'll add some oyster feast or some DT's( maybe once a month on the last two. And I turn all pumps off except one just to keep water circulated. I don't have a sump so I don't have to worry about that.

I also feed every other day. I broadcast feed a little marine or reef snow a few minutes before I target feed coral frenzy or mysis, it makes my corals go bananas, some look like they turn inside out! I don't bother turning my sump pump off, but i do put my MP10 on feed mode.
