Here's my 1,000 gallon outdoor "aquarium". At least a dozen or two fancy koi, breeding bullfrogs, snails, and the occasional blue heron looking for a meal. If only they'd eat the damned water lettuce.
Every Spring, a mallard pair stays for a few weeks, but never sets up house. Maybe next year!

My Koi eat any plant I put in there. There is a waterfall straight back that you can't see because of the Japanese maple branch hiding it from this view but it is fed from a stream that flows from a small upper pond that I grow plants in. No Koi up there.
Wonderful! I have never had issues with fish eating the plants, except for the duckweed which is put in the pond for that purpose. I feed 'em pellet food every night during "the season", though.
